(CW4) Canon EOS 5D Mark IV coming as 2 versions (5D Mark IV & Mark IVc, 28MP vs 18MP)

canonlogoQuestionMark2
I have been told (thanks) that Canon will announce two versions of the EOS 5D Mark III successor: the EOS 5D Mark IV and the EOS 5D Mark IVc. The former will be a “straight” update to the EOS 5D Mark III, the latter will be more video oriented, and it will feature 4k (while the Mark IV will not).

The source suggests that the 5D Mark IVc will have a lower resolution sensor than the 5D Mark IV, and that some of the technologies featured on Canon’s Cinema cameras will be sported on the 5D Mark IVc. The source also mentioned that the 5D Mark IVc will have the dual-channel readout of the EOS C300 Mark II (this rumor was already floating around the web).

I have some new specs to report. The source stated that the 5D Mark IVc will have

  • 18MP
  • 61 point AF system
  • ISO 100-204.800
  • 4k video (source says Canon has yet to define the frame rate)
  • Dual Pixel AF III
  • Many advanced video features
  • Features taken from Canon’s Cinema cameras

An interesting point: the source stated that Canon has yet to mark the frame rate for 4k video recording on the 5D Mark IVc. Apparently there are some heat issues with the frame rates Canon wants to deliver, which could be due to firmware problems.

The “straight” 5D Mark IV may have the following specs;

  • 28MP sensor
  • 12fps
  • Dual Pixel AF III
  • New and more advanced AF system (compared to EOS 5D Mark III), apparently it will not be the same AF as the 5D Mark IVc (which sounds a bit weird to me)
  • Anti-flickr technology (seen first on the EOS 7D Mark II)
  • Crop mode (featured on the EOS 5Ds)
  • ISO 100-204.800 (expandable to 409.600)

In general, expect many of the technologies Canon unveiled with their latest cameras to be featured on the EOS 5D Mark IV and 5D Mark IVc. Announcement of both cameras is expected between Summer and Fall 2015.

Stay tuned, and let me know what you think….

About our rumor rating:

  • CW1 – probably fake rumor, not reliable (less than 15% chance to be real)
  • CW2 – rumor from an unknown/new source, but otherwise at least a plausible rumor (20%-49% chance to be real)
  • CW3 – around 50% chance to be real, coming from a known source, or from new source with good insight in Canon’s business
  • CW4 – rumor from a known source that was right in the past, high probability to be true (60%-80% chance to be real)
  • CW5 – as good as certain to be true

(CW3) Canon EOS 5D Mark IV coming late 2015 with 28MP, 9 fps, and 4k

5d3

Northlight Images reports a new 5D4 rumor. According to NL the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV will come in late 2015, and only after the new EOS 5DS and 5DS R have started shipping in reasonable numbers.

There are some specs that go with the rumor. The EOS 5D Mark IV is said to feature 28MP, 9fps, and 4k video (4k was rumored first here on CW). Moreover, both the 5D4 and the EOS-1D X Mark II should see an advance in Canon’s flash control features. NL suggests Canon may not put the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R on sale as long as the EOS 5D Mark III is selling good.

We will see if this rumor got it right. For the time being it’s classified CW3. We also got a 5D Mark IV spec list some time ago, which looks more plausible to me. The spec list we got a month ago:

  • 24MP sensor
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF III
  • New and more advanced AF system (compared to EOS 5D3)
  • 4k video
  • Anti-flickr technology (seen first on the 7D Mark II)
  • Improved video features
  • Crop mode (featured on the upcoming EOS 5Ds)
  • ISO 100-51200 (H1: 102400, H2: 204800

(CW1) Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Coming With 18MP?

Canon RumorCanon Rumor

A weird rumor was posted at Canon Rumors. A “test camera” is mentioned, which “could” be the EOS 5D Mark IV. However, the specs are weird:

  • 18mp Full Frame CMOS
  • ISO 100-204,800
  • 61 AF Points (all crosstype)
  • 12fps
  • Dual CFast
  • 4K Video Capture

While we were the first to report that he 5D4 will have 4k video ob board, it looks somewhat strange that Canon will lower the megapixel count on the EOS 5D Mark IV. It’s 22MP on the EOS 5D Mark III and I can’t really figure out while it should be 18MP on the next iteration. The rest of the suggested specs are at least credible. But then: I think Canon will feature a new auto-focus system on the 5D4. I think the 5D4 rumor I got some weeks ago is more realistic.

I rate this rumor as CW1 since it doesn’t sound very plausible to me. What do you think?

(CW3) Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Coming in August 2015?

Canon RumorCanon Rumor

We know that Canon will announce the EOS 5Ds and EOS 5Ds R next week – but what’s going on with the EOS 5D Mark IV?

Northlight Images says they have been told that the EOS 5D Mark IV will be announced in August. The EOS 5D Mark IV is said to come with improved video and still performance and features, and with just a modest increase in resolution.

As we reported first, the EOS 5D Mark IV will most probably have 4k video recording. This will be a DSLR oriented to the sport, action and event photographers. I am sure the EOS 5D Mark IV will push Canon already exceptional low-light performance to new boundaries.

More About the EOS 5D Mark III Replacement – 3 Models Coming? (CW2)

EOS 5D Mark III Replacement
New bits emerged about the EOS 5D Mark III replacement, and the upcoming high resolution DSLR.

Canon Rumors writes:

We’re told that the next EOS 5D will come in three different versions. Two of the cameras named “EOS 5Ds” would be the high megapixel cameras with a resolution of 53mp. One of the cameras would have an AA filter and other would not. We’ve heard this sort of thing before, except we were told previously one would have a low pass filter, and the other would not. I do like the naming “EOS 5Ds”, as that may finally put to rest the “EOS 3D” moniker which has been around longer than this site has. There is also precedent on the “S” naming from the days of the “EOS-1D” and “EOS-1DS”.

The third camera would be an EOS 5D Mark IV, which would continue on the path of a lower megapixel event, sports, wildlife focused full frame camera. If this is true, I don’t believe all 3 cameras would come at the same time.

I am somewhat puzzled about the three different version of the 5D Mark IV, though it is to some degree plausible. Here at CW we heard just about one EOS 5D Mark IV recently, which is supposed to be the high resolution DSLR Canon themselves confirmed being in the works. It’s just a bit difficult to believe that Canon will make three different versions of the 5D Mark IV, since this hardly fits in Canon’s marketing strategy.

The 53MP sensor rumor surfaced before (well, it referred to 52MP), and there is some good possibility it is true. At least from a marketing point of view this makes sense because it would go beyond what Sony/Nikon have to offer.

Ken Rockwell Speculates about the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV (36MP, $3800, 7fps, 65 points AF)

Canon EOS 5D Mark IVCanon EOS 5D Mark IV
This is an unusual source for a Canon rumor, a new entry among the many contradicting and confusing Canon rumor mills.

Ken Rockwell posted some speculations about the upcoming Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, and they are less absurd than someone may think. In substance:

  • 36MP sensor
  • $3800
  • 7fps
  • 65 point Auto-focus
  • 98% viewfinder coverage
  • 3.2″ display with 1,280,000 pixels
  • 2 CF card slots
  • Announcement March 17 2015
  • Available late April 2015

All in all these specs are more plausible than many people may think (and possibly more plausible than all the things the hyper-active rumor mills may spit out in the next months).

What I can confirm from rumors I got so far (all from anonymous sources) are the announcement in Q1 2015 and the AF system. Not mentioned by K. Rockwell is 4k video recording, something I was tipped more than once. I am pretty sceptical about 98% viewfinder coverage.

What do you think?
