Canon EOS M3 Review (Camera Labs)

Camera Labs posted an exhaustive review of Canon’s EOS M3 mirrorless camera. Lots of sample videos and pics included.

From the conclusion:

At a time when many new cameras represent very minor updates over their predecessors, it’s refreshing to discover just how much Canon has improved on the EOS M3. Pick it up and you’ll notice the chunkier and more comfortable grip straightaway. Start setting-up the camera and you’ll appreciate the presence of dedicated mode and exposure compensation dials, along with three customizable buttons. During composition you’ll appreciate the convenience of a screen that now tilts 45 degrees down or up by 180 degrees to face you for selfies or filming pieces to camera. Prefer to compose with a viewfinder? You can now slot one onto the hotshoe. Need more light? There’s now a popup flash. Half-press the shutter release and you’ll notice the focusing is faster than before. Fancy sharing an image? Wifi with NFC makes it a doddle and once you get your photos on a bigger screen you’ll also notice they’re packed with detail and low noise.

(CW2) Canon EOS M3 Coming With 24MP Sensor?

Canon RumorCanon Rumor

I have been told (thanks) that the Canon EOS M3, rumored to be announced Friday 6th, may come with a 24MP sensor.

This rumor puzzles me a bit. I give it only a CW2 rating because the specs look pretty much like the supposed specs for one of the (also rumored) two models of the Rebel T5i replacement.

  • 24.2MP sensor
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF III
  • Automatic shooting modes
  • ISO 100-12,800 range
  • 7 fps
  • NFC
  • Optional EVF

Not very much, specs-wise. I am wondering and skeptical, especially because of the 24MP sensor. To me it seems strange that Canon may introduce a new APS-C sensor (at least resolution-wise a new sensor) in an entry-level DSLR (the next Rebel), or in a mirrorless camera. One thing is sure: the optional EVF is on a lot of people’s wishlist. On the other hand, who knows what Canon is planing? :-) I also got rumors saying Canon will go serious with mirrorless (1 | 2) in 2015. Only time will tell.

I am also wondering how much Canon’s Connect Station CS100 plays a role in the company’s strategic plans. If it does, Canon may feel some urge to release more NFC-enabled DSLRs. I got some rumors saying the CS100 is an integral part in Canon’s future plans. Did not publish so far because they didn’t look reliable to me. I am sorting this out.

I hope Canon will put some efforts in their next mirrorless camera. The EOS M system is a good system with plenty of potential, and it would be a pity if Canon decides to let it down. Since Canon is still offering the EF-M lenses in the EU and USA market, there is some founded hope the EOS M3 will be available in the US and EU (the EOS M2 is not).

Stay tuned, and if you want, let me know what you think in the comment section.

About our rumor rating:

  • CW1 – probably fake rumor, not reliable
  • CW2 – rumor from an unknown/new source, but otherwise at least a plausible rumor
  • CW3 – a 50% chance to be real, coming from a known source, or from new source with good insight in Canon’s business
  • CW4 – rumor from a known source that was right in the past
  • CW5 – as good as certain to be true

Has The Canon EOS 7D Replacement Been Delayed To Q3 2014? (and EOS M3, 750D Tidbits)

EOS 7D Replacement
Fake EOS 7D Mark II (mock-up)

Another rumor in the long series of rumors about the replacement for the Canon EOS 7D.

Latest rumors were suggesting a possible announcement in Q2 2014. But a new rumor that surfaced on the web is suggesting we will see the successor of the EOS 7D (price & specs) not earlier than in Q3 2014. The rumor further suggests that the delay is due to manufacturing issues related to the Dual Pixel AF technology that is featured on Canon’s newest sensor generation. So the delay doesn’t only affect the successor of the 7D but, according to the rumor source, also the announcement of the successor of the EOS 700D (price & specs), and the replacement for the EOS 100D (price & specs).

The rumor suggests a “higher performance” version of the 70D’s sensor for the replacement of the EOS 7D. But was does “higher performance” mean? More megapixel? And then “cheaper versions” of the same sensor are said to be featured on the 700d and 100D replacements. Again, was does “cheaper version” mean?

The rumor sounds a bit weird to me. And my sources are still suggesting a Q2 announcement date for the 7D successor. That’s not to say it is sure we will see a 7D replacement announcement before summer. It appears as if Canon is doing everything right to keep their plans hidden. We can’t even be sure the replacement of the EOS 7D will be named EOS 7D Mark II. There have also been rumors stating that there will be no EOS 7D Mark II at all.

It appears that the reported rumor was passed to various European Canon dealers to let them know that there will be a delay (everyone out there?).

And then there is another rumor that surfaced, about two possible new EOS M (price & specs) models to be announced for Photokina in September 2014. Again, it is suggested there will be an entry-level and a pro-level EOS M system camera, both appear to have the moniker “M3”.

Since the EOS M was released there have always been rumors suggesting a prosumer model in the EOS M series. Personally I think there is a lot of wishful thinking concerning a prosumer EOS M3.
