These Are Sigma’s Full Frame Mirrorless Lenses That Will Be Released Also For The Canon EOS R

Full Frame Mirrorless

We anticipated that Sigma will release four lenses for the Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless system after they have been released for Sony E and Leica L mounts.

The lenses are:

  • 35mm f/1.2
  • 45mm f/2.8
  • 12-24mm f/2.8
  • 24-70mm f/2.8

Images of three of these lenses (although not Canon mount) leaked over at Nokishita.

Tokina Opera 16-28mm F/2.8 Review (Photography Blog)

Tokina Opera 16-28mm F/2.8

Tokina Opera 16-28mm f/2.8 at a glance:

  • EF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/2.8 to f/22
  • Three Aspherical Elements
  • Three Low Dispersion Elements
  • Multi-Coating
  • Silent Drive DC Motor Autofocus System
  • 9-Blade Diaphragm
  • Built-In Lens Hood

Photography Blog reviewed the Tokina Opera 16-28mm F/2.8 lens for full frame DSLRs.

From their conclusion:

Sporting a more modern design that made its debut on the Opera 50mm f/1.4, this lens is well-suited to Canon and Nikon’s high-end full-frame DSLRs in both styling and size.

Less appealing is the slightly sluggish, audible AF system, the inability to fit a traditional filter system, and the lack of any weather-sealing, whilst the push/pull focal clutch mechanism is satisfyingly retro but less convenient than automatic manual focus over-ride.

Image quality is very good. Chromatic aberrations are well controlled and bokeh is surprisingly appealing when shooting at 28mm.

The only real optical issues are obvious vignetting and some barrel distortion at at the 16mm wide-angle focal length, a slight lack of centre sharpness when shooting wide-open at f/2.8 throughout the zoom range, and rather poor corner sharpness between f/2.8-5.6.

BCN Trends Show Sony Losing Market in Japan, Canon Steady, Nikon Gaining

Sony

BCN data for the full frame mirrorless market in Japan (April 2019) shows how Sony is slowly losing market shares in favour Nikon while Canon remains steady.

The five top ranking cameras are:

  1. Sony a7III
  2. Canon EOS RP
  3. Canon EOS R
  4. Nikon Z 6
  5. Sony a7II

Guess Sony will lose even more market shares in the next months. Besides Canon and Nikon’s offerings there is also stiff competition coming from the L-Mount front.

Canon Might Have a 63MP Full Frame Image Sensor On Their Agenda, Leaked Document Suggests

An apparently legit Canon document describing a full frame image sensor with a resolution of 63MP leaked over the web.

The 35MM63MXSCD named CMOS sensor has Dual Pixel AF, shoots around 5fps, and is made with a 300nm manufacturing process.

We expect Canon to announce a high resolution EOS R camera in Q4 2019. Could this be the sensor Canon will feature in their upcoming high resolution EOS R camera? Hard to say. It might be but it might also well be one of Canon’s super-specialised image sensors, maybe even a prototype that never went into production.

The sensor in the leaked document seems at first glance to be the sensor rumored for the high res EOS R model, although the latest rumor we got was talking about a 75MP sensor. We tend to believe this sensor has nothing to do with the upcoming high resolution EOS R camera.

More about Canon’s special purpose sensors can be learned here.

Canon’s High Resolution EOS R Camera Gets Another Mention

Canon Eos R Firmware Update

It was time to stir up rumors for Canon’s next, third mirrorless full frame camera.

We expect Canon to announce a high resolution mirrorless full frame camera, something our sources suggest since a while. There are little doubts that Canon will announce such a camera in 2019.

More uncertain are the specifications for this camera. Rumor has it that the Canon’s high resolution mirrorless full frame camera might have a 70MP sensor and even IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation). That’s a lot. Take this with a grain of salt.

What about the EOS 5Ds and EOS 5Ds R? Suggestions that Canon might ditch the EOS 5Ds(R) in favour of a mirrorless offering have been around since a while. Moreover, Nikon already released a high resolution model, so it’s just logic to expect Canon to do the same.

Stay tuned.
