Next Canon EOS R Will Have Higher Resolution Than Sony a7R IV

Canon Eos R Firmware Update

We have been tipped with a rumor about the upcoming high resolution Canon EOS R body.

We already had a bunch of rumors about the high res EOS R, this one is not really adding something to the heap. The source stated that the upcoming EOS R will have a resolution “way beyond the Sony a7R IV“.

The Sony a7R IV was announced a few weeks ago and sports a resolution of 61MP. Previous high res EOS R rumors suggested a resolution between 60 and 75MP. If the resolution is going to be “beyond” the a7R IV, then I guess the 75MP might nail it. That Canon will release such a camera is a sure thing, confirmed by no less than Canon execs. We also know that most likely Canon has already field-tested the high res EOS R camera. According to the source, Canon is set to become the alpha dog in the mirrorless yard.

We expect Canon to announce the high resolution EOS R body in 2019. We have been tipped with Fall as time frame but can not confirm it for sure for the time being. Most likely Canon will not announce the high res EOS R body along with the Canon EOS 90D and possibly a new EOS M camera on August 28th. Some new EF-M lenses might also be announced. And what about the RF mount lenses Canon already announced (development) and didn’t so far release? They’re on their way. Canon said they will release them in 2019 and there is no reason to doubt it.

Are These The Canon EOS C500 Mark II Specifications?

EOS C500

A new rumor about the upcoming Canon EOS C500 Mark II Cinema camera claims to list its specifications.

It seems 8K video will not be on board:

  • Full-frame sensor
  • RAW internal recording (both 4K and 2K). 4K is up to 60p, 2K up to 120p.
  • Optional XF-AVC recording in 4:2:2 10 bit (4K up to 60p, 2k up to 120p)
  • User interchangeable lens mount
  • Optional modules with EVF, genlock, timecode, 12G-SDI, etc
  • EF and PL mount available at launch
  • Power supply with BP-A series batteries, an optional module for V-Mount batteries
  • Optional module for 4x XLR inputs
  • Backwards compatibility with EVF-V70, LV-M1 and some other peripherals from previous Cinema EOS cameras
  • New media usage: CFExpress cards for faster readings and writing speed
  • WiFi and IP Streaming capabilities

So, which 8K camera has been used at the Apple event earlier this year? Not the EOS C500 Mark II, since it seems there is no 8K on board.

A Videocamera With RF Mount Might Be On Its Way, And Not Made By Canon (RED Komodo)

Red Komodo

Well this is interesting. RED about to release a videocamera with Canon’s RF mount (EOS R system)?

That’s what NewsShooter reports after having spotted a teaser for a RED camera named “Komodo”. And while it is just speculation for the time being, the folks at NewsShooter has a good point. If you compare the three images below, and look at the contacts on the mount of the RED Komodo, it seems the Komodo is featuring a Canon RF mount. At least the EF mount image (on the right) has a different array of contacts.

Looks like an RF mount doesn’t it?

So far RED’s President Jarred Land has only revealed what the RED Komodo is not:

  • It is not DSMC3
  • It is not a replacement for DSMC2
  • It is not 8k VV
  • It is not a Dragon or a Helium or a Gemini or a Monstro Sensor
  • It does not have an HDMI port
  • It does not use proprietary media
  • It is not a “module”
  • It is not under $5k, unless you own a Hydrogen.
  • It has no XLR ports
  • It does not have a fixed lens
  • It’s body does not weight more than 2 pounds.
  • It is not larger than 4 inches in any dimension.

An RF mount wouldn’t be a bad thing for a RED videocamera anyway. It would allow to use a plethora of lenses, both Canon EF lenses as well as others (mounted via adapter). So, at least from this point of view it looks plausible.

What do you think, is it possible that RED will release a videocamera with Canon RF mount? Sound off in the comment section.

Are These The Canon EOS M6 Mark II Specifications?

Canon EOS M6

After yesterday’s rumor about the announcement of the Canon EOS M5 Mark II and EOS M6 Mark II (all rumors), a set of suggested specifications for the upcoming Canon EOS M6 Mark II surfaced.

The Canon EOS M6 Mark II appears to be focused on vloggers:

  • 32.5 mp APS-C CMOS sensor (new sensor technology for higher dynamic range)
  • DIGIC 8+ Imaging Processor
  • 4K up to 30p (with no crop or 1.3x no pixel binning crop), Full HD up to 180p
  • No Canon Log but new Movie Picture Style
  • Dual Pixel AF Focus Guide
  • New Selfie mode and Vlog mode
  • Enhanced Movie IS
  • High-speed continuous shooting at a maximum of 16 FPS (with AE/AF)
  • RAW Burst mode at 30 FPS (with AE/AF)
  • Dual Pixel AF with expanded area
  • Eye AF (tracking possible)
  • Electronic shutter 1/16000s
  • Focus Bracketing
  • Supports external electronic viewfinder
  • USB-C charge power supply

While the specification list above is plausible, we recommend you take it with grain of salt. Lots of low reliability rumors are flooding the Internet, and so far the sources that were right in the past didn’t deliver any bits.

We expect Canon to have an announcement on August 28, 2019. Besides the Canon EOS 90D we expect Canon to announced also the Canon EOS M5 Mark II and the EOS M6 Mark II (leaked through certification authorities). Some new EF-M lenses are also possible.

Stay tuned, more to come soon.

A Pro Canon EOS R Camera In 2020 Seems To Be Very Likely, Rumor

Canon Eos-1d X Mark Ii

A new rumor suggests that a professional (think EOS-1D X equivalent) Canon EOS R body in 2020 is almost a sure thing.

A pro or sport oriented EOS R camera is rumored since a while and we know it is in development. 2020 is the year of the Summer Olympics. Canon will most likely announce the EOS-1D X Mark III before the Games, and an EOS R body which is equally oriented to sport photography might also be on Canon’s agenda. The rumor suggests such an EOS R camera might “definitely be in photographers hands” ahead of the Summer Games. However, this might mean these people is testing the camera, with an official announcement coming later on.

Before this pro/sport oriented EOS R body, we expect Canon to announce a high resolution model, possibly towards end of 2019.

Stay tuned, there is more to come.

Canon EOS M5 Mark II and EOS M6 Mark II Might Be Announced In August 2019

Canon Eos M5 Mark Ii Mirrorless

As expected, a new rumor confirms an already leaked suggestion that Canon might announce the Canon EOS M5 Mark II and the EOS M6 Mark II (all rumors).

Both cameras have already leaked through certification authorities. We just didn’t know if Canon would announce them along with the EOS 90D, or later on.

Along with the announcement date suggestion, the latest rumor delivers also some basic specifications for the Canon EOS M5 Mark II and EOS M6 Mark II:

  • Internal product name: Project Nacho
  • Both cameras will have a similar EVF to the Canon RP
  • No crop in 4K video
  • Supports high frame rates for slow-motion video

It’s not clear what is meant with “both cameras will have a similar EVF to the Canon RP” since the EOS M5 has a built-in EVF and the EOS M6 has not.

If the August announcement date is correct (we believe it is around 28th), then we should soon see more detailed leaks and images. Stay tuned, more to come soon…
