Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera to be announced before Photokina?

Canon Rumorscanon rumors

We have been told (thanks) that Canon may announce the long rumored full frame mirrorless camera before Photokina 2018, which happens in September.

So far we know as good as nothing about Canon’s full frame MILC. All tidbits we collected and were told in the past are listed here:

  • Dedicated full frame CMOS sensor
  • Different sources and sites were reporting that early prototypes exist, at least to be tested inside Canon’s labs. This intel came in 2016 and early 2017.
  • Canon is possibly working on a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount. There have been rumors saying that Canon is delaying this camera because of issues in implementing the EF mount. There is a lot of talk about this. If Canon manages to engineer a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount, thus allowing us to use our beloved EF lenses on a smaller and hopefully performing body, it will be a winner. Imagine what you could do with a MILC that goes along with your EF lenses. There is a serious chance we may see this.
  • The latest bit of info I got suggests Canon will announce a full-frame mirrorless camera with a sensor having a resolution of 36-38MP.

If 2018 is the year Canon will eventually announce such a mirrorless camera, then Photokina may indeed be the best event to showcase it. Let’s hope this rumor becomes true.

Stay tuned.

Ahead of Canon announcement: new leaked images, and more information about camera naming scheme

The Canon EOS M50 is named EOS Kiss M in Japan

A few days ahead of the announcement of Canon’s first 4K enabled MILC, a new SpeedLite, and two entry-level DSLRs, we can put order in the naming scheme Canon has chosen for their new gear (courtesy of Nokishita). We also have new images for your viewing pleasure.

  • The Canon EOS M50 (specifications) will be named EOS Kiss M in Japan (and Asia?). Two color options will be available, black and white. The kits will come with these lenses: 15-45mm, 18-150mm, and two double zoom kits. Shipment is expected for March 23, 2018
  • The Rebel T7 has this name in the US. It’s named EOS 2000D in Europe, EOS 1500D in China, and EOS Kiss X90 in Japan (Asia?). Why an entry-level camera needs four different monikers is sort of a mystery to me. May be to counter grey market import flows. There will be a body only option, and one with a kit lens. Shipping expected March 23, 2018.
  • As for the time of writing it’s not sure if the EOS 4000D (EOS 3000D in China) will be released in Japan.

Canon will also release an EOS M100 limited kit in pink by early April 2018 (Japan only, sorry for pink fans). The SpeedLite 470EX-AI is expected to ship late April 2018.

Canon will announce the new gear on February 25/26. Stay tuned.

Speedlite 470EX-AI

Specifications of the upcoming Canon Speedlite 470EX-AI leaked at Digicame-Info (and are machine translated).

  • Auto intelligent (AI) bounce mode of “Full Auto” and “Semi Auto”.With an electric head rotation device, the 470 EX – AI automatically determines the optimal bounce position eliminating unnecessary shadows.
  • The guide number is 47 (105 mm). It is driven by 4 AA batteries.
  • It covers the field angle of 24 – 105 mm. Wide panel (14 mm adapter) allows light to spread wide. Clip-on bounce adapter that makes light more soft.
  • Equipped with a dot matrix display that can display more detailed information.
  • The setting can be quickly changed with the shortcut button and the controller wheel.
  • EOS 8D Mark II, EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 6D Mark II, EOS 7D Mark II, EOS 80D, EOS 77D, EOS 800D, EOS 760D, EOS 750D, EOS 200D, EOS M50.
  • Size 74.6 x 130.4 x 105.1 mm. Weight 385 g (excluding batteries).

So, what is about the “AI bounce” feature of the Speedlite 470EX-AI. If I got the machine translation right, the flash automatically sets the appropriate bounce angle.

And, btw, have you seen the EOS 8D Mark II in the list above? Most likely a translation error. Or is an EOS 80D Mark II coming? Unlikely :) The EOS 5D Mark II is listed two times, so I guess machine translation mistake.
