Old “35mm lens for EOS M” rumor gets new life

Canon EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM EF-M 22mm canon lenses

New EF-M lenses are rumored since a while, and in the past we got a few suggestions it could be a 35mm prime lens, the first time in May 2016.  The last time we heard something in this direction was one year ago.

The suggestion of a fast, 35mm lens (re-)surfaced on the web. It’s suggested it may be either f/1.4 or f/1.8. We have always been told it would be a 35mm f/1.8 lens.

However, we think (have been told) there will indeed be new EF-M lenses in 2018. A fast 35mm prime lens would be a wonderful addition to the native EOS M lens line-up.

No prime lens for EOS M coming anytime soon

We had doubts about this rumor, which was suggesting Canon would announce a prime lens ahead of CP+. It just looked to be too much perfectly timed. Moreover, ahead of any important photography show it’s always “crap rumor season”. That’s not to say that websites are always responsible for fake rumors. We all get fooled, from time to time.

Now, unfortunately the “a new prime lens for the EOS M system before CP+”-rumor turned out to be not reliable.

Back in November 2016 we got an identical rumor saying Canon would announce a prime and a zoom lens for the EOS M system in 2017. It didn’t happen and since then I lost a bit of confidence about Canon’s plan with the EOS M system. A system that’s recognised to be powerful but to dramatically lack native lenses. Since the EOS M5 () and EOS M6 () you can properly use almost all EF and EF-S lenses via adapter (). Never the less it’s not the same as having good native lenses (something you get if you buy into Fuji’s mirrorless system).

New EF-M lenses are rumored since a while, and we got a few suggestions it could be 35mm prime lens. However we haven’t heard anything since a long time about an EF-M 35mm lens so we do not think this old rumor is still reliable. The last time we heard something in this direction was one year ago.

However, there is a lot of stuff Canon is set to announce ahead of CP+ (starting March 1, 2018), and it’s listed here.

Stay tuned.

Two new EOS M lenses coming this year, a prime lens before March 2018? [CW3]

Rumor has it Canon will announce two lenses for the company’s EOS M mirrorless system.

The two EOS M lenses are said to be a prime and zoom lens. The prime lens is said to be announced for CP+ (March 2018). No hints are given for the focal length, or for other specifications.

All truth to be told, back in November 2016 we got a rumor saying Canon would announce a prime and a zoom lens for the EOS M system in 2017. Back to the rumor. If Canon is set to announce a new EF-M lens to display at CP+, it almost for sure will happen along with the announcement of Canon’s next mirrorless camera, the EOS M50.

Stay tuned!

Canon EF 135mm f/2L IS to be announced first half of 2018? [CW2]

Canon EF 135mm f/2L IS

Canon may announce an image-stabilised (IS) version of the EF 135mm f/2L (price & specs), the Canon EF 135mm f/2L IS, a new rumor suggests.

The announcement is said to occur in the first half of 2018. CP+ 2018, happening in March 2018 is possible stage to display the EF 135mm f/2L IS.

Some time ago, two unreleased Canon lenses have been spotted at a certification authority. There is a chance one of these lenses is the EF 135mm f/2L IS, albeit it’s a very small one.

Canon 200-600mm non-L telephoto lens rumored again [CW2]

Here is another long running rumor, dating back to 2015 since when a patent for a Canon 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6 lens was spotted.

This lens is said to be a non-L lens, i.e. consumer oriented. Something both Sigma and Tamron have in offer (although in the 150-600mm range). This non-L, Canon 200-600mm super telephoto lens is now said to be announced somewhen in 2018.

You may wonder why such a super telephoto lens would not be an L lens. According to the rumor, Canon does not want to have an in-house competition with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II. Another reason might be that Canon wants to keep he price aligned with the Sigma and Tamron offerings.

Let’s hope there is some truth behind this rumor and that there will be a Canon 200-600mm lens.

That’s all for now. Stay tuned.

New Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 L lens rumored again

ef 50mm f/1.4

This appears to be on the way to become a recurring rumor. Again, it’s murmured Canon may announce a new EF 50mm f/1.4 “L” lens, now in 2018.

It’s suggested Canon is testing not less than two version of this lens, i.e. prototypes are said to already undergo testing by select photographers.

So, what are this rumored lenses about? One is said to be an EF 50mm f/1.4L IS lens, which might have been developed along wth the new EF 85mm f/1.4L IS. It’s unclear what the other 50mm lens is. Absolutely no hints here.

Seconding the rumor, the announcement of both, new 50mm lenses is scheduled somewhen in the first half of 2018.

Please take this rumor with a grain of salt. While being perfectly plausible, rumors concerning new 50mm lenses by Canon are pretty common and this one is also running since long. I don’t think this lens is one of the two unreleased Canon lenses that recently leaked at a certification authority.

The current EF 50mm f/1.4 lens (not L) dates back to 2003. A new, improved and “L” grade version of this lens wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Stay tuned…
