Canon Patent For Superfast Prime Lenses For The EOS R System
If we believe the sheer number of Canon patent applications for RF lenses we must think Canon takes their EOS R full frame mirrorless system very seriously.
Canon patent application 2019-197095A (Japan) discusses the optical formulas for three very fast prime lenses for the RF mount. The lenses are 18 mm f/1, 18mm f/1.2, and 25mm f/1.2.
- Focal length: 18.51mm
- F no: 1.24
- ω : 49.45
- Image height: 21.64mm
- Lens length: 129.00mm
- Back focus: 16.40mm
- Focal length: 24.59mm
- F no: 1.24
- ω : 41.35
- Image height: 21.64mm
- Lens length: 129.01mm
- Back focus: 13.57mm
- Focal length: 18.50mm
- F no: 1.03
- ω : 49.47
- Image height: 21.64mm
- Lens length: 150.00mm
- Back focus: 4.99mm
Don’t expect these lenses to be announced anytime soon.

How To Do Autofocus Microadjustment On Your Lens (tutorial)
Here is something useful. A video about hot to do autofocus microadjustment.
The 14 minutes video below by Michael The Maven shows how to microadjust autofocus on your lens using a cereal box and a ruler. He uses a Canon EOS 90D to show it.
The cereal box and ruler method allows photographers to quickly visualize where their lenses are focusing and to verify if they are out of alignment. This video demonstrates the philosophies of MFA (micro focus adjustment) and some of the principles to become familiar with if you decide to try this on your own.
If you prefer there is a neat written tutorial about how to do autofocus microadjustment by Canon itself and you can download it here.

Canon Seems To Be Lagging In Mirrorless Camera Sales 2018
Japanese site Toyokeizai published some statistics on the mirrorless camera market in 2018. The data comes from Techno System Research, a private marketing research company.
There is nothing really new here. Sony is the top dog in mirrorless sales, followed by Canon and the rest of the pack.
- Sony 42.5%
- Canon 19.8%
- Fujifilm 17.5%
- Olympus 8.4%
- Panasonic 7.0%
- Nikon 4.6%
A note of caution. I was not able to understand for sure if the used data refers to the Japanese market or to the global market, though I tend to believe it’s the latter.
Given that we are almost in 2020 I wonder if these stats really matter.
