There’s A High-end Canon EOS R In Consideration, Says Canon Exec, And It Will Have IBIS

Canon Eos R Firmware Update

Not the first time that a Canon exec suggests there will be a high-end Canon EOS R model, but it’s nice to hear it again.

The Canon exec is David Parry, Canon UK’s product intelligence consultant, interviewed by the folks at Digital Camera World. And what you can read below about the high-end Canon EOS R is marketing department language at its finest:

There’s a high-end EOS R in consideration […] So we are considering bringing a high end EOS R to the market.

If we do, it will have dual card slots, it will be that sort of level, and under development is in-body image stabilization. So we are looking at this technology, it is in development with us.

I think in-body IS is really exciting for us, if we do bring it to market and it does come across, I think it could be really good and I think it says something about our [EOS] R series.

So, just to get it straight.

  • Canon is considering to release a high end EOS R body
  • If they do (if!) then it will have dual card slots
  • If they do it then it will have IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation)
  • IBIS is exciting and would be good for the EOS R lineup

There is no reason to doubt that Canon is working on IBIS, given the remarkable collection of patent applications dealing with it and the fact that another Canon exec told the world about. It’s likely that the first Canon camera to feature it will be a mirrorless.

Stay tuned

Canon EOS-1D X Mark III Rumored Specifications Update

Canon Eos-1d X Mark Ii

At the beginning of October some rumored specifications for the upcoming Canon EOS-1D X Mark III surfaced. Now there is a bit more that’s rumored.

Below you see the already rumored specifications and the new ones (in bold):

  • 28.1MP full frame CMOS image sensor
  • Up to 30fps still shooting
  • Dual DIGIC 9 (first time the EOS-1D series would introduce a new processor)
  • IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation)
  • New and larger rear LCD, possibly brighter too
  • February 2020 announcement
  • New battery with “new feature”
  • Optical viewfinder with more/additional information displayed
  • 61 autofocus points, all cross-type with a “slightly” larger spread
  • Similar top-down LCD to the EOS R

All plausible suggestions, in our opinion (with one exception). It’s also speculated that there could be a development announcement related to the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III (all rumors).

The only weird element in the list above is IBIS. Given the remarkable collection of patent applications dealing with IBIS., we think IBIS is coming to Canon cameras. But will the EOS-1D X Mark II replacement be the first Canon camera to feature it?

Stay tuned, more to come.

Pro Canon EOS R Camera Might Be Announced In March 2020, 60MP Rumored

Canon Eos R Firmware Update

We got some new bits about the upcoming pro Canon EOS R model.

The pro EOS R might be on display at the Photography Show 2020 in UK and get released shortly after.

As previously rumored, the pro EOS R will be to the (also upcoming) Canon EOS 1D X Mark III what the EOS 5Ds was to the EOS 5D Mark III. Resolution is suggested to be 60MP. The pro EOS R will lack some features that Canon might reserve to the EOS 1D X Mark III, which will remain Canon’s top offering for sport photographers.

Please note that this rumor contradicts other rumors and hints suggesting Canon will release the pro EOS R in 2021. Rate the rumor accordingly.

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III (all rumors) will be released after the pro EOS R but in time for the Summer Olympics 2020.

That’s all for now, stay tuned.

The Canon EOS R Mark II and EOS 5D Mark V Are On Canon’s Roadmap

Eos 5d Mark V

Wondered what’s going to happen with Canon’s full frame DSLR lineup? Well, Canon still wants to update the 5D series.

New rumor has it that both the Canon EOS 5D Mark V and the Canon EOS R Mark II showed up in an internal roadmap document.

We think it is out of doubt that Canon will replace the EOS 5D Mark IV, sooner or later, despite the success of the EOS R lineup. And it’s also to expect that Canon will announce a replacement for the EOS R, sooner or later. Canon is transitioning from DSLR and the EF mount to mirrorless and the RF mount, but it will not be a matter of a few years.

While the source of the rumor did not mention a timeframe, it’s safe to assume that both the EOS 5D Mark V and the EOS R Mark II will not be released that soon. Don’t expect it for the beginning of 2020. At least the EOS 5D Mark V might not be a 2020 affair but get released not earlier than 2021.

Stay tuned.

More Canon EOS-1D X Mark III Information Leaks (IBIS still rumored)

Canon Eos-1d X Mark Ii

We are getting closer to the announcement of Canon’s next top dog flagship DSLR, and some new bits come in.

A new set of rumored specifications for the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III surfaced over the web. According to the source, the specifications below apply to a working prototype of the EOS-1D X Mark III.

  • 28.1mp full-frame CMOS
  • Up to 30fps still shooting
  • Dual DIGIC 9 (would be the first time the EOS-1D series would introduce a new processor)
  • IBIS
  • New and larger rear LCD, the source said it looked brighter too.
  • February announcement

This is the second time that IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation) is mentioned to be featured on the EOS-1D X Mark III (all rumors). And that sounds a bit weird to us. Why should Canon introduce IBIS on a top tier DSLR, which will most likely be bought by people already owning lots of expensive and image stabilised lenses? Wouldn’t it make more sense on a mirrorless camera? IBIS on a future Canon mirrorless camera has already been suggested by a Canon exec. For sure Canon filed a remarkable collection of patent applications dealing with IBIS. IBIS is coming to Canon cameras, that’s a sure thing. But will the EOS-1D X Mark III be the first to feature it?

However, announcement of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III is expected in February 2020, so stay tuned for more.
