Canon RF Lens Rumor: A Nifty Fifty And Maybe A Pancake Lens Coming In 2020

Canon EF 40mm Canon Rf Lens Rumor

Here is a new Canon RF lens rumor.

It’s suggested Canon will announce two relatively inexpensive lenses for the Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless system: a 50mm f/1.8 (Nifty Fifty) lens and maybe also a pancake lens with f/2.8.

The source claims that at least the f/2.8 pancake is “definitely in the works” and that we might expect the announcement within the first half of 2020.

The same source claims the 50mm f/1.8 lens has already been shown on a roadmap document, though without any timeframe for the announcement.

This rumor has a high likelihood to be reliable. First, a 50mm f/1.8 lens seems to be just a must for any full frame system, so it’s nothing but straight logic to expect Canon to release it. Secondly, a pancake lens with f/2.8 is also just straight logic, at least at some focal lenght. Both lenses are for sure on Canon’s RF mount roadmap.

Stay tuned for the next Canon RF lens rumor.

Canon Is Likely To Announce An RF 70-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS Lens For The EOS R This Year

Canon RF 35mm F/1.8 Review Macro IS STM RF 70-400mm

Canon will most likely announce a new lens for the EOS R full frame mirrorless system, the RF 70-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS.

A Canon patent application for such a lens can be found in a Japanese patent application database. There are no hints about the announcement date, just that it will happen in 2020. The source says the size of the rumored RF 70-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS will be more or less the same as the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS

Seems to be a nice addition to the EOS R lens lineup, and will be a budget oriented lens (I totally missed the “L”), which I’m sure will make happy a lot of people.

Canon EOS Rs Rumor: Announcement Date Gets Another Mention

Canon EOS Rs Rumor

Here is a Canon EOS Rs rumor. The announcement date of the high resolution Canon EOS R we leaked in the past got another mention on the Internet.

Please note that the upcoming high resolution EOS R model has been dubbed “EOS Rs” by the Internet community and that it is not an official Canon moniker.

However, latest murmurings about the Canon EOS Rs suggest it will be announced ahead of CP+, starting at the end of February, and that fits perfectly with the already rumored announcement date. Along with the high resolution EOS Rs, Canon might also announce two new, possibly budget-oriented RF mount lenses.

It seems that the sensor resolution we leaked back in April is still the rumored resolution. We were told the EOS Rs will feature 75MP (but 80MP have also been rumored). So far we do not have really reliable intel about the the EOS Rs, all we know is what is rumored (take with a grain of salt):

  • 75mp full-frame CMOS
  • Sensor “focused on the dynamic range”
  • Frames per second “… Sounded similar to the EOS R”
  • DIGIC 9
  • Dual Card Slots
  • Joystick the same as the EOS-1D X Mark III
  • Larger and higher resolution EVF than the EOS R
  • Fully articulating LCD screen
  • Fully weather-sealed
  • Similar ergonomics as the EOS R (No touch bar)

The list originates from a source who claims to have shot a prototype of the EOS Rs.

Stay tuned, the next Canon EOS Rs rumor will come soon, and also expect first reliable leaks in the next weeks.

Unreleased Canon Lens Appears At Certification Authority (RF mount?)

According to Nokishita, a Canon lens for a ILC has been registered at a Russian certification authority. The SKU of the lens is 4111C005AA (image below). Since when are lenses registered at certification authorities?

canon lens

We think this most likely refers to an upcoming RF lens for the Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless system. Or does it refer to the already released RF 85mm f/1.2L DS, mentioned in the image above? Which one we do not know for the time being. Recent rumours suggested Canon is set to release some consumer oriented lenses for the EOS R. If true, this lens might be among them.

Among the next Canon releases we expect the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III (all rumors), already announced development-wise but still shrouded in mystery. The EOS-1D X Mark III is expected for February 2020. There is still uncertainty about the sensor resolution. While both 20MP and 24MP are rumored, we think the latter is more likely.

Canon might also release up to three EOS R bodies in 2020. One will be the high resolution EOS R, also expected for February 202, the other one might be the pro-oriented EOS R, though this one might well slip into 2021. And then there might be the EOS R Mark II in 2020. One of these upcoming EOS R bodies is rumoured to have a hybrid EF/RF mount. Time will tell.

One of the hottest speculation about upcoming Canon cameras concern IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation). Some rumors suggest it will be featured on the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III. We think this is unlikely. There is no reason to doubt that Canon is working on IBIS, given the remarkable collection of patent applications dealing with it and the fact that a Canon exec told the world about. But it’s likely that the first Canon camera to feature it will be a mirrorless camera in the EOS R lineup, and not the flagship DSLR.

Stay tuned for more.

The release of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III is expected around the beginning of February 2020, and there are no doubts left about that.  An authoritative source confirmed it will be at the beginning of 2020, February is the natural choice (CP+ happens). General availability should be ready in April 2020.

Below is the list of what we know for sure so far about the EOS 1D X Mark III:

  • All-new CMOS sensor
  • Dual-pixel 525-point CMOS AF with 90/100% coverage horizontally and vertically

There is still uncertainty about the sensor resolution. While both 20MP and 24MP are rumored, we think the latter is more likely. Another persistent rumor says IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation) will be featured in the EOS 1D X Mark III. We have no doubts that Canon is working on IBIS, given the remarkable collection of patent applications dealing with it and the fact that another Canon exec told the world about. Canon EOS 1D X Mark III Rumor, February 2020 Announcement Mentioned Again (and an image)

Canon Eos 1d X Mark Iii Rumor

Here is a new Canon EOS 1D X Mark III rumor. Another mention of a possible announcement in February 2020 emerged from the Internet. Canon already announced the development of the EOS 1D Mark III but did not reveal all specifications or the release date..

There are no real doubts left about the announcement of the Canon EOS 1D X Mark III. An authoritative source confirmed it will be at the beginning of 2020, February is the natural choice (CP+ happens).

An image (on top) said to show the upcoming Canon EOS 1D X Mark III was posted by Canon Rumors. It’s a low resolution image. The question is: is this the EOS 1D X Mark III? It doesn’t look like.

The image on top may refer to:

  • a prototype of the EOS 1D X Mark III (for instance unpainted or unfinished on the outside)
  • a 1D X Mark III with a different look (will Canon really offer a “vintage” 1D X Mark III?)
  • A faked image and hence not a 1D X Mark III

We still haven’t made up our minds, though most think it’s a prototype of the Canon EOS 1D X Mark III. What do you think?

Below is the list of what we know for sure about the EOS 1D X Mark III:

  • All-new CMOS sensor
  • Dual-pixel 525-point CMOS AF with 90/100% coverage horizontally and vertically
