Update: the source of the rumor now suggests July 2020 for the announcement of the EOS R5.

Are Canon’s next generation mirrorless cameras going to be announced next month? Latest EOS R6 and EOS R5 announcement rumor suggest so.

It’s very likely that Canon had to postpone the EOS R5 announcement because of the global pandemic. Reports about a possible shipping delays after the announcement also emerged.

However, it seems now the time might have been come and that the EOS R5 announcement will happen soon, along with the EOS R6 and a bunch of lenses. June 2020 appears to be the month when Canon will eventually fully announce their game-changing mirrorless camera, the Canon EOS R5.

Canon already partially disclosed specifications and features (1 | 2) of the EOS R5, and there is not much left to discover but the price. After the last specification reveal there are even some first hands video to watch. All R5 coverage is listed here.

And what about the price? We can only speculate so far. Sure, it won’t be inexpensive given the impressive set of features (8K video!). The EOS R5 is a game changer for the industry.

Canon EOS R6 Shows Up At Wireless Certification Authority

Another step towards the announcement of the Canon EOS R6.

The EOS R6 showed up at a wireless certification agency with the moniker DS126831. This is the first time the denomination DS126831 shows up and we know it refers to the EOS R6.

  • IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation)
  • 12fps mechanical and 20fps electronic.
  • 4K @ 60p
  • FullHD @ 120p
  • Dual card slots
  • No top-down screen
  • Lower resolution EVF than the EOS R5
  • Build quality not as good as the EOS R5
  • Bluetooth 4.2 (EOS R5 gets Bluetooth 5.0)
  • LP-E6NH Battery (same as EOS R5)
  • Rumored announcement is July 2020

Canon EOS R6 Announcement Postponed To July 2020?

A new Canon EOS R6 rumor surfaced, suggesting the announcement might be postponed to July 2020.

So far, despite rumors suggesting possible shipping delays, the announcement was expected for May 2020. But maybe that’s not the case. Latest rumor suggests July 2020 as announcement date. The source does not mention if this delay has to do with the COVID-19 pandemic, but we guess it has.

With the announcement getting delayed, the EOS R6 will not begin shipping before August or September 2020. Very unlikely earlier.

Canon EOS R5 And EOS R6 Shipments Might Get Delayed (COVID-19 impact)

The global COVID-19 impact might well delay shipments of both the Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6. It was already murmured that it might happen (here and here).

First thing first, shipment of the EOS R5 and R6 will not begin earlier than July 2020, if not later. Next, and unfortunately, there are reasons to believe Canon will not be able to produce the number of cameras they planned and that means low quantities of both cameras to ship. At least for the next months. Consider that the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the production and supply chains of Canon and also of other manufacturers that Canon’s chains build on.

However, all rumors suggest the official announcement of the EOS R5 and EOS R6 will not be delayed and is still scheduled for May 2020.

As for the Canon EOS R5, 45MP resolution have indirectly been confirmed through the revealed specifications. Canon says the R5 will shoot DCI 8192 x 4320. That means the sensor has a width of 8192 pixels. Given the 3:2 ratio the height is 5461 pixels. All sums up to a 44.7MP sensor.

Canon EOS R6 Still Expected To Get Announced in May 2020

Latest rumors have it that Canon will announced the Canon EOS R6 in May 2020, as we were expecting.

However, there might be some issues with availability after the announcement, because of the global pandemic situation. The Canon EOS R5 is also expected to get released in May 2020, and here too there might be issues with availability. Availability depends by demand but at least for the EOS R5 it’s safe to say it will sell a lot. A few days ago Canon revealed some more specifications.

The EOS R6 will be less feature rich as the R5. If the EOS R5 is the mirrorless version of a 5-series camera then the EOS R6 is the mirrorless version of the 6-series cameras.

Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 Announcements As Scheduled, But Shipping Might Get Delayed

There have been rumors the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 might get delayed because of the Coronavirus outbreak. It has neither been confirmed nor denied by Canon.

Now another rumor adds some bits. It’s reported that Canon will stick to the scheduled announcement dates. However, shipments could indeed be subject to a bunch of yet unknown factors that could have an influence on dates.

The same source also reports that Canon will likely push back announcements for new lenses. If this is caused by the virus outbreak is not reported.

This sets the announcement of the EOS R5 (already development-announced) and the EOS R6 within the next two months. A new Cinema Camera should also come in April 2020.

So, you’ll be soon be able to place a preorder for the R5 and R6, and will then have to wait an unknown time for delivery. Let’s hope not.
