Here’s another size comparison courtesy of ApoTelyt, between the upcoming Canon EOS RP and the Nikon Z 6.

The Canon EOS RP will be announced on February 14, 2019, along with five new lenses for the RF mount.

The strengths of both cameras compared:

Reasons to prefer the Canon EOS RP: 

  • More flexible LCD: Has swivel screen for odd-angle shots in portrait or landscape orientation.
  • More selfie-friendly: Has an articulated screen that can be turned to be front-facing.
  • Less disturbing: Has an electronic shutter option for completely silent shooting.
  • More compact: Is smaller (133x85mm vs 134x101mm) and thus needs less room in the bag.
  • Less heavy: Is lighter (by 190g or 28 percent) and hence easier to carry around.
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced segment (20 percent cheaper at launch).
  • More modern: Is somewhat more recent (announced 5 months after the Z6).

Advantages of the Nikon Z6: 

  • More detailed viewfinder: Has higher resolution electronic viewfinder (3690k vs 2360k dots).
  • Easier setting verification: Features a control panel on top to check shooting parameters.
  • Larger screen: Has a bigger rear LCD (3.2″ vs 3.0″) for image review and settings control.
  • More detailed LCD: Has a higher resolution rear screen (2100k vs 1040k dots).
  • Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (12 vs 5 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.
  • Better sealing: Is splash and dust sealed for shooting in inclement weather conditions.

ApoTelyt published a rather accurate size comparison between the Canon EOS R and the upcoming Canon EOS RP.

They also list the respective strengths.

Advantages of the Canon EOS R: 

  • More detail: Offers more megapixels (30.1 vs 26.2MP) with a 7% higher linear resolution.
  • More detailed viewfinder: Has higher resolution electronic viewfinder (3690k vs 2360k dots).
  • Easier setting verification: Features an LCD display on top to control shooting parameters.
  • Larger screen: Has a bigger rear LCD (3.2″ vs 3.0″) for image review and settings control.
  • More detailed LCD: Has a higher resolution rear screen (2100k vs 1040k dots).
  • Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (8 vs 5 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.
  • Better sealing: Is weather sealed to enable shooting in dusty or wet environments.
  • More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in September 2018).

Reasons to prefer the Canon EOS RP: 

  • Better sound control: Has a headphone port that enables audio monitoring while recording.

Confirmed: Canon EOS RP To Feature 26MP Sensor

UPDATE: a set of reliable specifications leaked.

Turns out the unknown source who yesterday suggested the Canon EOS RP will have a 26MP sensor was right.

Nokishita just leaked some specifications about the upcoming Canon EOS RP full frame mirrorless camera (machine translated):

We have been able to confirm the canon “EOS RP” at the moment. SKU is “3380c001”. “DS126751” of radio wave certification. The model ID is “K433”. Kit with 24-105MMUSM kit and Mount Adapter kit. 26.2 million pixel full-size sensor. Battery “LP-E17.” Supports external grip “EG-E1”

Model denomination K433 has been used for registration at a wireless certification authority. The EOS RP is Canon’s next full frame mirrorless camera, it’s an entry level camera and it will come as kit with the RF 24-105mm lens and bundled with the EF to RF lens adapter.

A previously rumored list of specifications has now to be considered unreliable.

The fact the EOS RP has a 26MP sensor will lead many to argue Canon has recycled the Canon EOS 6D Mark II sensor.

Announcement of the EOS RP and five new RF lenses is expected for February 14, 2019.

Update 1/6/19: it turned out the rumor is reliable.

An unconfirmed suggestion showed up in our inbox, coming from unknown source. The upcoming Canon EOS RP might have a 26MP sensor.

Earlier a rumor emerged suggesting the EOS RP will have a 24MP sensor. In favour of a 26MP sensor there is a yet unreleased Canon camera which leaked a year ago through a wireless certification authority.

The unreleased camera denominated K433 has these (machine translated) specifications:

  • Mirrorless camera
  • Full size [full frame, editor’s note]
  • Wi-Fi · Bluetooth installed
  • Maximum image size of test machine: 6240 × 4160 [makes up to 26MP, editor’s note]
  • Probably will be released within 1 year data as 5D Mark IV [K349], the image size may be a dummy possibility)

As fas as we know this camera has not yet been released. On the other hand, the poorly translated “image size may be a dummy possibility” might also mean there is no 26MP full frame mirrorless camera on Canon’s agenda. This is not the first time a 26MP sensor suggestion comes up, but there was some confusion about the denomination. So, it looks the Canon EOS RP might have a 26MP sensor. The announcement is on February 14.

Review: Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L (superlative image quality, Photography Blog)

Photography Blog reviewed the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L lens for the EOS R system. A lens that’s universally considered being of outstanding optical quality.

From their conclusion:

There’s no getting away from the fact that the new Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM lens is very big, heavy and expensive, but there’s also no getting away from the fact that it’s extremely well-built, fast in terms of the maximum aperture, and capable of delivering superlative image quality.

We’ve seen the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM described as offering four prime lenses in one, and after using it for an extended period of time, we’d certainly agree with that assessment. Whether using it as 28mm, 35mm, 50mm or 70mm, it delivers tack-sharp images both in the centre and at the edges of the frame, with no need to stop down to get acceptable results. That means that you can shoot at f/2 at any focal length and get buttery-smooth bokeh as a result of the 9-blade aperture and that maximum aperture that is one-stop faster than most zooms of this type. Slight vignetting at wide-open apertures and a little barrel distortion at 28mm are the only real optical issues of note from what is optically an incredible lenses. Read the review…
