Yet Another Mention Of Major Firmware Update for The Canon EOS R

canon eos r firmware update

This is the second time that a major firmware update for the Canon EOS R is rumored. The first time was in September 2018, a few weeks after the announcement, and most of us thought it was a completely unreliable rumor.

This time we think it is possible, despite the fact there are no hints on what the “major functionality firmware update”, which apparently should come in Q1 2019, will bring to the EOS R.

A firmware update within 6-7 months after the release of a camera is not uncommon, but there is a serious possibility that the firmware update will just fix some bugs and not bring all kind of supercool functionalities to the camera (this is something Fujifilm does, Canon not). In the past there have been rumors about all sort of firmware updates for the EOS 6D Mark II and the EOS 5D Mark IV, and no one really got it. So, don’t put too much hope on this.

Here Are 5 Reasons To Get The Canon EOS R, And A First Look On The Kipon ELEGANT 75mm f/2.4 Lens

canon eos r firmware update

Mattias Burling posted a short video where he explains why the Canon EOS R does well for his professional work. And he had a chance to use the new Kipon ELEGANT 75mm f/2.4 lens for EOS R mount.

He says:

[…] there is much more to like about the camera than I list in this video. For example in camera video color, highlight roll off, audio, etc, etc. Another negative is that its a bit too feature rich, capable and easy to use for it to challenge […] creatively on the streets. For recreational shooting I prefer something more limiting.

And I know there will be 4K crusaders commenting on me liking HD. […] I started shooting 4K Raw video before most you even left 720p. So I know all about it. The fact is that I have use had the HD from the EOS-R projected together with FS7 4K on huge screen and no one notices any difference. Law of diminishing return and the right tool for the job.

Canon Still Dominates Camera Sales In Japan, EOS M50 Stable On Top

Canon eos m50 mark ii

BCN rankings for December 2018 show how popular Canon cameras are in Japan, and how well the EOS M50 (Kiss M in Japan) is doing.

The EOS M50 is Canon’s most popular mirrorless camera so far. It’s likely that the EOS R will sooner or later be the most popular Canon MILC but for now the little M50 is selling like hot cakes.

The EOS M line-up is Canon’s mirrorless offering with an APS-C sensor. And it is here to stay. Some weird rumors surfaced suggesting Canon will make an EOS R model with an APS-C sensor. This is unrealistic, and even Canon execs said it will not happen.

Irix Confirms Lenses Are Full Compatible With Canon EOS R

irix

Swiss manufacturer Irix published a press release where they state that the company’s lenses are full compatible with Canon EOS R cameras when the lenses are used through Cabnon’s EF to EOS R adapter.

Press release:

Irix lenses now fully compatible on Canon EOS R mount

We would like to announce and confirm that there are no issues with Irix lenses, as regards their general operation for the Canon EF mount in their current line-up when used on the Canon EOS R camera, and as released by the Canon Corporation via their Canon EOS R Adapter (Canon EF to Canon EOS R mount).

Thanks to this, it is possible to control the aperture from the camera, information about the distance transmitted to which the lens is focused, and to save full information about the exposure parameters in the EXIF format.

Compatible Irix lenses:

  • Irix 11mm f/4
  • Irix 15mm f/2.4
  • Irix 150mm f/2.8 1:1 Macro

Canon Set To Release 7 Lenses For EOS R In 2019?

Canon already let the world know what lenses they plan to release in 2019.

In at least two different events Canon execs let us know that 2019 the company would release what is usually referred as the “holy trinity”, i.e. a 16-35mm f/2.8, a 24-70mm f/2.8 and a 70-200mm f/2.8 (see here and here).

Latest from the rumor outlets suggests that Canon might announce no less than seven lenses in 2019, with the caveat that some of these will ship no earlier than 2020.

Besides the upcoming “holy trinity” of lenses, the rumor suggests Canon might announce these lenses:

  • RF 105mm f/1.4L
  • RF 85mm f/1.8 IS STM
  • RF Macro lens
  • RF non-L kit lens

Moreover, there might be another wide angle lens in development, with an unclear release schedule. Finally, it’s suggested Canon will release at least 15 RF lenses in the next 30-36 months.

So far we are sure only about the “holy trinity”, not so much about the rest. Canon will obviously expand the lens ecosystem for the EOS R in the next years, and the suggested lens are all very plausible since they re the basics of every lens ecosystem for a full frame camera. No surprises here.

What else do we know about Canon’s EOS R agenda? We know Canon is set to release a high resolution EOS R model somewhen in Q1/Q2 2019. It’s likely that Canon will also announce the “holy trinity” of lenses along with the high res EOS R. Rumors about an APS-C EOS R model have been quit lately. Some rumor mills suggest there could be another EOS R model set to be announced late in 2019.
