A New Canon Mirrorless Camera is Coming in 2015 (70D sensor, and new lenses)

The highly underestimated Canon EOS M

I got new emails regarding a Canon mirrorless camera I think will be announced in 2015. I give this rumor a high plausibility to be true.

While these are new sources, at least one of them showed a good insight in Canon’s business. I am usually very conservative when it comes to publish the rumors that fill up my inbox. I decided to post because the emails are largely identical, covering similar aspects (as mentioned below).

What we can expect (it’s not much that leaked so far):

  • Canon wants to go serious with mirrorless technology (Canon themselves confirmed it in a recent interview)
  • The next M-system camera will sport the sensor of the EOS 70D – my take: though one of the sources stated it will be the 7D2 sensor, I believe Canon will go for the 70D sensor.
  • Hence, it will have 20MP and the game changing Dual Pixel CMOS auto-focus.
  • Canon is trying to miniaturise things as much as it is possible – expect a truly small and lightweight body
  • Minimal physical controls – Canon will further optimise the already excellent touch interface introduced with the EOS M (and other DSLRs) – this is also necessary in order to keep the body size as small as possible
  • There will be more EF-M lenses in 2015 – we have been told there will be two EF-M prime lenses coming before end of 2015 – no mention about the focal length. Personally I think at least one of them will be a 35mm pancake lens with at least f/2.8
  • One source stated there will be an optional EVF (electronic viewfinder) – which I think is a reliable information. If it is true that Canon will try to make this MILC as small as possible no other viewfinder option is feasible.
  • Announcement before Summer 2015

As usually, take everything with a grain of salt. The only thing I am pretty sure to be true is that Canon will announce a new mirrorless camera soon, and that it will be a cool piece of gear.

I also got mentions of a full-frame mirrorless camera Canon is rumored to be actively researching. Read about here.

Let me know what you think in the comment section.

Canon High-Megapixel DSLR Going Beyond the 50MP Mark?

Canon High-Megapixel DSLR
At Northlight Images a speculation surfaced suggesting the high-megapixel DSLR that Canon themselves confirmed being in the works may have a 52MP sensor.

The speculation is based on the assumption that Canon’s new sensor might be based on the same 4.2 micron pixel design used for the sensor in the Canon EOS 70D and EOS 7D Mark II. This would translate to 52MP when applied on a full-frame sensor.

52MP would be a good marketing argument, considering that Sony/Nikon sensors reach 46MP. If true, Canon is on the way to win the megapixel race. We will see.

Canon Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera is a Long Term Affair (but it’s coming)

Canon Full-Frame Mirrorless CameraCanon Rumor

Thanks to the source!

I have been told that Canon is indeed researching a full-frame mirrorless camera (as posted before). However, according to the source this may not be a short term project. In other words, while Canon has a FF mirrorless camera on their radar and engineers working on the challenges such a camera poses, this camera may not come in 2015. The source says we might at best see a development announcement at the end of 2015, and that this camera will most probably not hit the market before 2016.

The source told me that Canon is researching if a FF mirrorless camera “makes any sense”, given that Canon is already able to make small-sized DSLRs (like the Rebel SL1, the world’s smallest DSLR) and is further researching ways to make even smaller DSLRs. Another point that was mentioned is that Canon already delivers very good image quality with APS-C sensors, and wants to push APS-C technology further. The high ISO performance of Canon’s new APS-C flagship, the EOS 7D Mark II, tells a long story. It’s simply amazing.

To some degree this fits with the things Canon’s Masaya Maeda said in an interview a few days ago. When asked if Canon is working on a full-frame mirrorless camera, Mr. Maeda said “Uh, I can’t answer that now”.

I think a Canon full-frame mirrorless camera is coming. It’s just a matter of when we will see it.

Canon Officially Confirms the High Megapixel Camera and Commitment to Mirrorless (UPDATE)

High Megapixel Camera

In an interview with DC.Watch, Canon’s Masaya Maeda confirmed that Canon is working on a high megapixel camera, and that the company is still interested in developing mirrorless systems. If I got the machine translated text right, the talk is also about new lenses.

That’s what I got from the interview:

  • Lenses are important and Canon will continue to develop new and better lenses. Outstanding EF lenses make users want to have an EOS system.
  • Canon is researching how to get even higher/better optical performance
  • Canon is investigating if mirrorless cameras should have interchangeable lenses (this could point to large sensor compact cameras with fixed lenses). However, Canon is exploring both scenarios, mirrorless cameras with fixed and with interchangeable lenses
  • Canon takes mirrorless technology seriously and is committed to further develop mirrorless systems
  • Mr. Maeda did not want to confirm or deny the possibility of a full-frame mirrorless camera
  • Canon is actively researching a new kind of camera
  • Canon realizes that there are users that need higher resolution, and thus will develop such a camera. To me it sounds as if Canon may announce a high megapixel camera soon
  • Canon is working on algorithms for better in camera processing of images
  • Shutter technology may change from mechanical to electronic sometimes in the future
  • There is a possibility Canon may develop a medium format camera on the long term

UPDATE: Someone in the dpreview forum made a quick translation/sum-up of the review:

  • The decline in DSLR sales is coming mainly from the entry level, as the evolution in that segment has slowed. He admits that they have not been able to introduce new entry class products that would spur people to change models (the original statement can be seen as an indictment of either Canon, or the entire DSLR industry). However, he does note that developing countries like Brazil and India are still seeing double digit growths.
  • He speculates that maybe part of the mirrorless needs can be met by high end compact cameras, as the latter type gets more and more zoom range. Canon is trying both options.
  • On the other hand, he also speculates that mirrorless may replace the Rebel line in the future.
  • Annual updates of entry class models are no longer likely. (Canon never did annual updates of mid- and high-end models anyway.)
  • He sees electronic shutter as the future, saying “global shutter makes more sense.”
  • Canon will apparently stick with “glass” based IS for the time being, and believes it still has room for improvement. (Curiously, the other alternative the interviewer suggested was electronic IS, and neither side seems to talk about IBIS.)
  • Durability against e.g. shock and drop, in addition to “uncompromising optics,” is a focus point in developing new EF lenses these days.
  • Full size mirrorless? “Uh, I can’t answer that now.”
  • Medium format? “The 35mm format has so much potential left. Although I don’t deny the merits of a larger sensor, there are many other things we need to be doing right now.”

All that sounds very interesting, and confirms some of the rumors that surfaced recently. What do you think?

Canon’s High Megapixel DSLR Eventually Coming in 2015?

Canon's High Megapixel Canon Rumor

Canon Rumors got another mention about the since long fabled high megapixel Canon DSLR. This time they rate the rumor as coming from a trusted source and with a high degree of reliability:

We have confirmed that a high megapixel camera is coming from Canon in 2015 and it will be around 50mp. The camera will not be an EOS-1 style body, so don’t expect the price to be above $4000.

A high megapixel camera from Canon is a long running rumor and it is not the first time it is rated as being almost sure to be true. We will see what’s coming. I’ve to say that I am somewhat sceptical on all these high megapixel rumors.

No mention this time if the sensor will be made by Sony. Stay tuned…
