Ken Rockwell Speculates about the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV (36MP, $3800, 7fps, 65 points AF)

Canon EOS 5D Mark IVCanon EOS 5D Mark IV
This is an unusual source for a Canon rumor, a new entry among the many contradicting and confusing Canon rumor mills.

Ken Rockwell posted some speculations about the upcoming Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, and they are less absurd than someone may think. In substance:

  • 36MP sensor
  • $3800
  • 7fps
  • 65 point Auto-focus
  • 98% viewfinder coverage
  • 3.2″ display with 1,280,000 pixels
  • 2 CF card slots
  • Announcement March 17 2015
  • Available late April 2015

All in all these specs are more plausible than many people may think (and possibly more plausible than all the things the hyper-active rumor mills may spit out in the next months).

What I can confirm from rumors I got so far (all from anonymous sources) are the announcement in Q1 2015 and the AF system. Not mentioned by K. Rockwell is 4k video recording, something I was tipped more than once. I am pretty sceptical about 98% viewfinder coverage.

What do you think?

Canon Getting Serious with EOS M System (and CPS roadshow in May 2015)?

Canon EOS M

A few days ago an EOS M rumor surfaced, today we have some more bits about.

I have been told (thanks) that Canon Professional Services and Canon sale forces in Germany have informed various big German dealers that Canon HQs are recalling all EOS M models, but are letting all EF-M lenses in stores and branches. Dealers were told that Canon will address the EOS M in December. For the time being it looks as if it will be a development announcement rather than a last minute X-Mas surprise. If the rumor is reliable then Canon might getting serious about the EOS M system.

I’ve also been told that a CPS roadshow is scheduled for May 2015 to showcase new and important products Canon is going to announce in 2015, which possibly could be the rumoured professional cameras Canon may announce.

New Canon EOS M Camera Coming?

EOS M

Long time we didn’t have an EOS M replacement rumor. A new one surfaced just in time to heat up the holiday season discussion.

Canon Rumors writes:

We’ve been told that Canon has given word to various divisions around the globe that they will address the EOS M in December of this year. Apparently demo units have been recalled by Canon at customer centres in a couple of countries that aren’t in Asia, which suggests a truly global replacement of the EOS M.

The rumor is rated as coming from a new and unknown source, so take your big pinch of salt. Moreover, December sounds a bit strange as announcement date for a new, globally sold EOS M camera (the EOS M2 is on sale only in Japan and few other Asian countries). All in all, a rumor with many unknown parameters.

To this end, I would like to cite from a recent interview with Canon executives:

Was the Canon EOS M an experiment?

Well it was certainly an experiment! Japan and Asia as a whole accept mirrorless cameras more than any other markets. In the US, in terms of total number of cameras sold, mirrorless cameras account for less than 20%.

Will the EOS M2 come to the US and EU market? Mr. Tokura says:

It’s a possibility but we haven’t made a final decision yet. We’re looking at the market [more about this issue here]

When asked if it is easier to make lenses for mirror less systems, Mr. Naoya Kaneda answers:

In designing lenses for mirrorless cameras we have a degree of freedom, in that they don’t need to have a long flange back distance. Especially when making high-quality wide zoom lenses, it’s easier to design them for a mirrorless platform. A good example of this is the 11-22mm zoom for the EOS M. Its optical performance is very high.

It seems pretty clear that Canon has no intention to give up the EOS M system. The point is if they will ever make a pro-grade EOS M camera. So far no reliable rumor points in this direction.

The excellent EOS M is a bargain these days. Don’t believe all the bad press it got and have a look at the serious reviews. For the EOS M2 you may have a look at eBay.

We have a big giveaway going on, don’t miss it. And don’t forget to show us what you can do with a Canon camera.

Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L Set to be Replaced Soon?

EF 35mm f/4L

Edit: corrected typo in post title.

Canon Rumors says:

We’re told that that Canon will replace their 35mm f/1.4L following the announcement and shipping of the upcoming EF 11-24mm f/4L, which has been rumoured since August. We’re told that an announcement date hasn’t been set, however the lens could appear as early as Q1 of 2015, or fall into the second quarter of next year.

According to the given rating, the rumour comes from a source that was reliable in the past.

CW’s take: agree with the rating of the rumour. Alone the number of patents for a 35mm f/4 lens filed by Canon in the last two years make it plausible (patents: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4). It’s also a long time since the EF 35mm f/1.4L was released in 2001.

Announcement Soon: Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L Lens (Update)

EF 11-24mm f/4L
The image of the 11-24mm that leaked some time ago.

I have been told by a good source (thanks) that Canon will soon announce the EF 11-24mm f/4L lens. The announcement may be a matter of a week or two. Price is said to be around $3,000.

An image of the new ultra-wide angle zoom lens showed up time ago. All agree that the image (above) is not a fake. Moreover, there is also a patent for such a lens.

Update (thanks Paul): Canon Germany’s site has leaked the 11-24mm lens, though the link does lead to a “page not found”. In the image below you see a screenshot of the page. The 11-24mm is mentioned where the image is missing. The text says:

The EF11-24mm 1:4L USM is the widest ultra-wide angle lens for Canon full-frame cameras. It features a completely new design, new lens coating and outstanding performance.
