Yet another pro-level EOS M rumor (new APS-C sensor, and anything else you may wish) [CW3]

Eos M3

We had many rumors about a pro-level EOS M camera. Here is another one, surfacing at the right time.

I’ve had a hard time to assign a credibility rating to this rumor. In some ways it looks too good to be true, and it could also be seen as a sum-up of all the earlier pro-level EOS M rumors. On the other hand, it could also be real. I decided for a CW3, since anything stated in the rumor has a fair chance to be true. Given the many fake rumors that are sent around to a lot of people, I strongly recommend you take it with a big grain of salt. Let’s see what the key features of the rumored pro-level EOS M camera are:

  1. Expanding the EF-M system
  2. First ConnectedCamera device
  3. New technology sensor (APS-C)
  4. Built in EEVF viewfinder
  5. Pro level AF performance
  6. Best in class video capability
  7. Pro build quality with enhanced ergonomics
  8. Wider support for the EF lens family

As for 1), we already know that Canon will announce new EF-M lenses. Masaya Maeda himself stated it. The most liley candidate is a 35mm f/1.8 STM lens. I have no idea what 2) means. The EOS M3 has WiFi and NFC on board. No idea what a “ConnectedCamera device” means, if not WiFi and NFC. Point 3) suggests Canon may introduce a new APS-C sensor. This is not only plausible, but entirely likely. It has to be seen what we can expect by the suggested “new technology”. A higher resolution sensor with Dual Pixel AF would fit into “new technology”, so do not expect miracles on the sensor front. 4) is rumored since Canon released their first mirrorless camera. Generally speaking, points 4) to 7) seem to be informed wishful thinking. It’s what we all hope Canon will deliver with their pro-level MILC. Point 8) is interesting, since it could point to a new EF/EF-S to EF-M adapter. We spotted a pertinent patent for such an adapter, with improved AF speed.

It’s claimed the above bits come from an internal presentation. I can’t help but to me this sounds pretty much like wishful thinking. Don’t get me wrong, anything listed above may find its way into a professional Canon mirrorless camera. It’s just that it is exactly what we all were asking for, and what we are reading on the web since years, rumor after rumor. Let’s just hope it’s true and Canon will soon back it up. Another interesting point: the rumor says the alleged pro-level EOS M will be seen after the EOS M3 got an update. If I got it right, it means we will see this pro-level EOS M after Canon released the successor of the EOS M3. So, we may see two new APS-C EOS M models next year (both above the EOS M10), and one full-frame model too. It’s getting crowded.

Along with the same rumor came also a mention that the Canon EOS 6D Mark II may be announced at Photokina 2016 (in September, the 6D2 has always been rumored to be announced Q1-Q2 2016), and that Canon will extend 4K video to more devices (EOS 5D Mark IV?).

Our latest rumor concerning the EOS M system suggests Canon’s full-frame mirrorless camera is delayed because of mount-related issues.

Do you think this is a reliable rumor? Your thoughts are welcome…

Latest Wishmors round-up (80D, 7D Mark III, 50mm f/1L, 6D Mark II) [CW0]

canon rumors

It’s time to post a round-up of the many fake rumors I got, christened “wishmors” (wishful rumors) by my humble self. Please note: I don’t consider any of these wishmors to be plausible. I report this stuff for the sole purpose of fun, and to let you know what sort of suggestions fill my inbox.

We start with the EOS 80D (more 80D wishmors here and here):

EOS 80D will support focus peaking [editors note: this one could eventually turn out to be true, CW1]

What about an EF 50mm f/1.0L lens?

On Q2 2017 you will see this as an actual product if the engineers manage to keep the weight under control.
Canon is working on a II version of EF 50mm f/1.0 L which will have higher resolving power and incorporate the new lens element found in 35mm f/1.4 II.
The autofocus motor has been upgraded significantly. It’s fast to autofocus but there is a trade-off: the lens weights a lot.
Initially the management wanted the new 50mm f/1.0 to be available for release in Q2 2015. The project was delayed when engineering couldn’t keep the weight under control. The current goal is to release the lens in Q2 2017.
Optically, the lens exhibits almost no coma. It’s designed for use in the f/1.0 – f/2.8 range and for this reason its optical performance won’t be as good after f/2.8.
It will ship in a new kind of packaging in gold color. All Canon imaging products will gradually adopt the new box design.
There will be no printed user instructions in the box, instead there will be a downloadable PDF on Canon’s website. The same will be true for all new Canon lenses.
The price is expected to be very high, much higher than the current 50mm f/1.2. I have no information on something more specific.

The EOS 6D Mark II

Canon’s 6D Mark II is imminent and will introduce support for JPEG2000, a better image format. Standard JPEG will still be the default format and work as before, but photographers will have the option to enable JPEG2000 shooting from the menu.

Time ago we had a rumor about the top LCD becoming a color display

The color top LCD isn’t only a blue skies project, it will be put in future EOS DSLRs, it will be touchscreen and will support functions like: histogram, liveview, touch input for changing settings, and other things.

The EOS 7D Mark III  gets already a mention (the EOS 7D Mark II was announced September 2014)

Canon is developing 7D Mark III, it’s a slight update of Mark II tentatively scheduled for release sometime in 2017. The specs of the released product might change but for the moment it’s 24 MP, DPAF, and has a high-durability non-swivel touchscreen which is disabled by default but can be enabled through the menu and its use is entirely optional. No CF slot, it has dual SD UHS-II.

And I also have this info: Canon wants to release updates to its cameras more often but the updates will be less revolutionary, the Rebel and xxD (e.g. 80D) lines will test new technologies and sensors before they appear in the 7D line.

This is just a selection of the wishmors I get :-) Enjoy life!

Canon EOS 6D Mark II specifications suggestion [CW2] – UPDATE

Eos 6d Mark Ii

Update: I just learned (thanks lw) that this rumor originated from a forumI am not downgrading it because all in all it sounds plausible and it is covered by previous rumors. But still.

Original post:

A rumor suggesting a set of feature for the upcoming (2016) Canon EOS 6D Mark II. Some of the specs leaked first here on CW. Please note that it seldom happens that spec lists leaking months before an announcement are very accurate.

  • 24mp Full Frame CMOS
  • 1.5 stops better at higher ISO
  • Low-light autofocus (centre point) at -5 EV
  • Two AF systems are currently being tested or the EOS 6D Mark II and which was chosen is unknown at this time. There will be more AF points than the current camera.
  • WiFi with NFC and GPS
  • Wireless battery charging with the Qi standard
  • Internally Canon switches from VxWorks (Could have meant DRYOS) to an Android-based embedded OS, 6D Mark II will be the first Android-based camera from Canon.
  • Dual-pixel autofocus technology
  • Touchscreen
  • Swivel LCD a-la-70D
  • Anti-flicker a-la-7DII
  • Will ship in a new box design in gold colour.

Take it with lotsa salt, but if true this makes up a pretty solid replacement for the EOS 6D. Basically, the suggested spec lists confirms many things we have already anticipated: the EOS 6D Mark II will continue to be Canon’s entry level full-frame DSLR, it may have a tiltable touchscreen, WiFi and GPS, and Dual Pixel AF. Having an AF system able to focus even at -5EV would be a game changer to me.

The quoted rumor also suggests two AF systems are currently tested. I was told there are two 6D2 models undergoing tests. I think my source then likely got confused. Finally, I am bit sceptical about the EOS 6D Mark II being an Android-based DSLR.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS 6D Mark II rumors floating around [CW1]

canonlogoQuestionMark2

This appears to be a try to stray fake rumors for the fun of doing it. However, our mission is to report any Canon rumor, so we won’t miss this. EOS 5Dx is the latest rumored moniker for the upcoming EOS 5D Mark IV.

The following “rumor bits” were posted in the DPReview forum:

The Digic 7 is going to be a quad core cpu which will allow 4x the processing power for high MP, high frame rate bodies. The 5DX will contain one Digic 7 and the 1DX Mark II will contain 2 Digic 7s and 1 Digic 6. The Digic 6 will be for metwring and other smaller tasks. The 1DX will have a different larger battery while the 5DX will keep going with the same.

and

This next processor from Canon will be class leading and will be much faster than whats currently out. It will have multicores. The processing power will be equivalent to a laptop from years ago.

All posts are from the same forum user, which concludes:

Keep in mind 1DX Mark II, 5DX and 6D Mark II coming out in a matter of months.

While all this sounds at least plausible, I would take it with a huge amount of salt. It’s not the first time that hoax-rumors are posted in forums. We do not expect the EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS 6D Mark II to be announced in 2015, both cameras are expected in Q1 2016.

What about the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II? The EOS-1D X Mark II could indeed be announced towards the end of 2015. But will it come at the August 14th announcement? Probably not. We expect the Rebel SL2 and two lenses to get announced in August. However, the EOS-1D X just got a $700 price drop, and some people sees this as a proof for an imminent announcement.

What do you think about this rumor, whishful thinking or real thing?

All EOS-1D X Mark II rumors, all EOS 5D Mark IV rumors, all EOS 6D Mark II rumors.

Canon announcement for August 14th, Rebel SL2 and two lenses coming? [CW3]

rebel sl1
Canon Rebel SL1/EOS 100D

The latest Canon rumor that surfaced on the web states that Canon is set to announce a DSLR and 2 lenses on August 14th.

I do not think this announcement will regard the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV or the Canon EOS 6D Mark II. Both DSLRs are expected for Q1 2016. However, given Canon’s secrecy and the fact that as good as all Canon rumors of the last 2-3 years got it right only a few weeks before an announcement, it is still possible that we will see the 5D4 and 6D2.

Could the Canon Rebel SL2 be announced in August? There was a rumor back in May 2015 suggesting a Rebel SL2 announcement for August. The Rebel SL1/EOS 100D was announced March 21st, 2013. That’s almost two and half year away. If the rumor of an August 14th announcement is reliable, then this announcement might indeed regard the Rebel SL2. I think a 50% chance is likely for this rumor.

What about the lenses? We heard that the EF 35mm f/1.4L Mark II is ready for production. Other lenses that are rumored to get announced soon are the EF-M 85mm f/1.8 IS STM, a new EF-M 18-55mm IS STM, and the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L Mark II.

Stay tuned, we will soon know more. What do you think?

Canon EOS 6D Mark II rumor (and user poll), two test-units out in the wild? [CW2]

Canon RumorQuestionMark2

In the past we had rumors pointing to different sensor resolutions for the Canon EOS 6D Mark II: 24MP and 28MP. A new rumor I got (thanks) suggests that Canon is still testing both scenarios.

Is this likely? I guess it is a bit late to make tests to decide if it is better to release a 24MP EOS 6D2 or a 28MP EOS 6D2. Most of us agree that the EOS 6D Mark II will be announced by Q1 2016. Canon still testing the EOS 6D Mark II doesn’t sound very likely to me.

However, we do not yet have reliable rumors about the EOS 6D Mark II sensor resolution. Here at CW we got rumors about a 28MP sensor, other suggest it may have 24MP sensor. Might this post start some new EOS 6D2 rumors.

There are also rumors suggesting the EOS 6D Mark II will go upmarket. There is some misunderstanding or confusion here. The EOS 6D2 is not “going upmarket”, it will just have all the new features that technology can offer in 2015-16. The EOS 6D Mark II will be Canon’s next entry-level, full-frame DSLR.

While I do not give much credit to a rumor stating Canon is still testing two possible models of the EOS 6D Mark II, I am pretty curious to learn what you think will be the sensor resolution of the Canon EOS 6D Mark II. And feel free to let me know what you think in the comment section.
