Canon Patent For RF 8mm f/4 Circular Fisheye Lens For EOS R System

Circular Fisheye

So many Canon patents for RF mount lenses. Here is another one, and it’s for a circular fisheye lens.

Canon patent application 2020-56995 (Japan) discusses the optical formula for an RF 8mm f/1.4 circular fisheye lens for the Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless camera system.

  • Focal length: 8.10 mm
  • F number: 4.00
  • Half angle of view: 90.84
  • Image height: 11.50 mm
  • Lens length: 66.13 mm
  • Back focus: 13.21 mm

This might be a patent that gets into production sooner or later. More Canon patent applications are listed here. Some particularly interesting patent applications we think might get into production are these:

Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS Review (a good travel lens)

Canon RF 24-240mm F/4-6.3 IS Review

Here is a Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS review.

Dustin Abbott reviewed the Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS, an affordable and versatile all-in-one zoom lens for the Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless system. This seems to be the perfect travel lens for EOS R/RP owners.

From his conclusion:

The Canon RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM is not going to set any records for performance, but that’s not what it was designed for.  It was designed for people who don’t like to change lenses all the time and want a lens for their new mirrorless camera that can do a little bit of everything.

[…] It is also for travelers who want to be able to shoot everything from landscapes to telephoto shots and not have to mess with lugging a bag full of lenses around all day.

[…] It is one of the few lenses on the RF mount to date that don’t completely break the bank, and it turns the EOS R/RP/future body into a flexible platform for capturing a wide variety of situations in either stills or video. It has a competent IS and AF system and good enough optics to deliver a lot of great pictures. Learn to use it well and you can mitigate its shortcomings. I have to admit that despite having a kit full of great lenses, a lens like the RF24-240mm appeals to me for the simple reality of its flexibility.

A Canon RF 85mm f/2 IS STM Lens Might Be In The Works

Canon RF 85mm F/1.2 DS Review

Is Canon set to release a third 85mm lens for the EOS R system, i.e. a maybe more affordable Canon RF 85mm f/2 IS STM lens?

That’s what a new rumor is suggesting. Canon might announce a Canon RF 85mm f/2 IS STM lens for the Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless system in 2020. If we got it right, this would be a non-L lens, and hence most probably won’t have the high price of the two other 85mm lenses for the EOS R, the RF 85mm f/1.2L and RF 85mm f/1.2L DS “Defocus Smoothing”.

We also have reason to believe that Canon is set to release a bunch of non-L RF prime lenses with f/2-f/2.8 within this year (2020), and these too should have a more affordable price. According to the source, these prime lenses might range from 18mm to 85mm.

We expect Canon to announce a new Cinema camera on April 20, 2020, during a livestreamed conference, most likely the Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark III. The EOS R5 will not be announced on April 20, 2020, we expect the EOS R5 announcement before Summer 2020.

All Canon rumors are listed here. Stay tuned, stay safe, stay at home.

The Canon EF-RF mount T Speed Booster® ULTRA 0.71x is able to able “to mitigate most of the 4k video crop factor of EOS R (1.75x) and EOS RP (1.63x) and reduce it to 1.24x and 1.15x respectively“.

The Metabones Canon EF-RF mount T Speed Booster® ULTRA 0.71x is already available for $479 at B&H Photo | Adorama | Metabones

Key Features

Metabones EF-RF Speed Booster®  ULTRA 0.71x – to adapt Canon EF mount full-frame lenses to the new Canon RF mount. Filmmakers are now able to mitigate most of the 4k video crop factor of EOS R (1.75x) and EOS RP (1.63x) and reduce it to 1.24x and 1.15x respectively. The field of view is now much closer to still photo mode. This Speed Booster is not intended for still photography but will work if the camera is configured to APS-C mode. 60p FHD video does not work at all.

Optical

  • Increase maximum aperture by 1 stop. (with a maximum output aperture of f/0.9).
  • Increase MTF (details).
  • Makes lens 0.71x wider.
  • Advanced 5-element/4-group optical design incorporating ultra-high index tantalum-based optical glass by Caldwell Photographic in the USA (patent granted).

Electronic

  • Autofocus.  AF speed is properly adjusted to account for and leverage the shorter focal length and the brighter maximum aperture.
  • Dual-pixel autofocus (DPAF) and video AF support.
  • Focal length and aperture are adjusted in EXIF (see note 3).
  • Image stabilization (IS) lens support.
  • Store EXIF data (lens name, focal length and maximum/minimum aperture) for one manual lens in the adapter.
  • Build-in multi-function Control Wheel (turn/ push-in) for assignable functions(eg. ISO, shutter speed or aperture control, depth-of-field preview).
  • LED indicator shows communication status.
  • Powered by camera body. With most lenses, no external power source required.

Mechanical

  • The tripod foot is detachable and compatible with Arca Swiss, Markins and Photo Clam ball heads.
  • Flocking to reduce internal reflection.
  • Rubber gasket protects the RF mount connection from dust and moisture.
  • Aluminum alloy and brass construction with chromium plating.
