Global Shutter Coming on Canon 1-series DSLRs? (CW2)

Canon RumorCanon Rumor

A rumor (thanks) suggesting that the next big thing coming from Canon will be global shutter on all future 1-series DSLRs. The aim is to push the frame rate of these DSLR to new levels. The EOS-1D X is rumored to get replaced during 2015. Could be the first Canon DSLR to sport a global shutter.

Most CMOS sensors (as you find on a DSLR) have a rolling shutter, which reads pixel values from top left to bottom right (typically). The problem with a rolling shutter is the distortion that becomes visible with fast moving, rotating objects. CCD sensors store each pixel value until all pixels values are read out at once (hence the global shutter).

I do not think Canon will start to use CCD sensors, so the question is how Canon is going to implement a global shutter on a CMOS sensor. A possible solution could be to have a memory for each pixel where to store the charge (value) until all pixel values are read at once. This would keep the advantages of the CMOS sensor and allow to feature a global shutter. Could such a technology give higher frame rates?

Next Canon Rebel T6i/EOS 750D to Come in Two Variants with 24MP Sensor? (CW1)

Canon RumorCanon Rumor

Rumor has it that the next Canon Rebel (EOS 750D in Europe) will come to market with two different models, the 750D and the 760D.

Canon Rumors posted a spec list:

  • Full HD movies, MP4 format, HDR movie, automatic shooting modes (EOS 750D )
  • 24.2MP sensor and Canon’s DIGIC 6 image processor
  • ISO 100-12,800 range
  • Flicker Detection technology
  • Five frames per second continuous shooting mode
  • 19 cross-type AF point system
  • Hybrid CMOS AF III
  • Rear Quick Control Dial (EOS 760D )
  • Creative movie modes (EOS 760D )
  • Wi-Fi and NFC

A spec list that sounds to good for a Rebel/EOS xxxD camera. And a 24MP sensor is listed. That would mean the next Rebel gets a new sensor tech (at least resolution-wise), instead of the current 20MP sensor featured on the EOS 70D and [shoplink 22664]EOS 7D Mark II[/shoplink]. Unusual to introduce a new sensor on an entry-level camera. No US naming scheme is mentioned. To some degree, the possible split in two different models reminds me of a rumor I posted a few weeks ago, suggesting Canon will release a new DSLR between the EOS 750D and the [shoplink 14246]EOS 70D[/shoplink].

Interestingly enough, the (supposedly) higher model of the two, the 760D, has  a rear control dial. We saw such a controller on a so far undisclosed DSLR that leaked a few weeks ago in some Connect Station CS100 promotion material. See the pic below.

Is this the EOS 760D?

CR themselves rate the rumor very low, and I agree. The spec list looks more like a wish-list. However, the possible split in two variants of the next Rebel is in some way related to the rumor of a DSLR positioned between the 750D and the 70D.

What do you think?

Don’t Buy A Canon EOS-1D C Before February 1st (price drop coming? CW3)

EOS-1D C

A few weeks ago we learned that Canon Hong Kong dropped the price of the EOS-1D C by $1000, but just in Hong Kong. Now, according to Canon Rumors, such a price drop could also come to the USA. They write:

We’re told that something on pricing will happen on February 1, 2015 in the United States, there was no word from elsewhere around the globe. We weren’t told what the drop in price would be, but to “hold off buying a 1D-C until at least February 1, 2015″.

Actually the EOS-1D C sells for $12,000 at Adorama | B&H Photo.

Canon EOS-1D C Price Drops by $1,000 (in Hong Kong)

It appears the Canon EOS-1D C saw a price drop around $1,000 by Canon Hong Kong, where it is now selling for approx. $7,000 ($12,000 in USA). There are speculations these may mean something, like a replacement coming soon (don’t think so).

EOSHD writes:

According to EOSHD forum member Fabuloux, whose local dealer now sells the 1D C for HKD 54,000 ($7000 US dollars) the low price is a result of Canon lowering the official list price to $61,999 HK dollars. Sure enough you can view the new price on the official Canon Hong Kong website here.  That is now MUCH closer to the RRP in Hong Kong of the plain old 1D X, which sells for $44,000 ($5700 US dollars).

A difference of approx. $1,700 to the  [shoplink 4119]EOS-1D X[/shoplink] is an interesting point. Given the price in Hong Kong you may want to have a look on eBay to see if you can grab an EOS-1D C for $7,000.

Canon Rebel T6i/EOS 750D To Be Announced For CP+ (CW4, and more mention of 11-24mm f/4L coming)

750D
Is this the Rebel T6i/EOS 750D?

Canon Rumors got word that Canon will announce the Rebel T6i/EOS 750D shortly before CP+. They write:

We’ve received confirmation that the camera that has appeared in a recent Canon leak is indeed the next Rebel and we should see the announcement sometime before CP+ in February. No specifications for the camera were given.

The same rumor reported by CR also suggest that the DSLR Canon leaked last week (images above and below) in a Connect Station CS100 promo video, is indeed the Rebel T6i/EOS 750D. If true, this means Canon is moving the Rebel line upmarket, since the depicted DSLR has a lock slider and a top LCD display, both features usually seen starting from the semi-pro line-up. And since it is used together with the CS100 we can also assume it will have NFC. The image below also depicts the supposed T6i/750D.

CR’s rumor also confirms our rumor posted a few days ago that Canon will announce the (already leaked) EF 11-24mm f/4L lens for CP+, suggesting a price of $2899 in USA and $3099 in Canada.

Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L Coming for CP+ Next Month? (CW2)

EF 11-24mm f/4L

I got word that Canon might announce the already leaked EF 11-24mm f/4L lens for CP+ in February 2015.

An image of EF 11-24mm f/4L leaked some time ago (the image on top of the post), and all agree it was the real thing and not photo-shopped. Another leak happened shortly after on Canon Germany’s site. Finally, there is also a published patent for a 11-24mm f/4 lens. The lens is rumored to come with a pretty high price tag, around $3000.

The lens is real. We were expecting the announcement to happen in 2014 but id didn’t. An announcement for CP+ is at least plausible. New source, so keep salt ready :-)
