Death Of Canon EOS M Series “not happening” But Production Might Slow Down, Report

canon eos m50 mark ii review

We have some news about the imminent death of the Canon EOS M lineup. It’s not going to happen.

A good source contacted us and told us that Canon putting an end to the EOS M lineup is “not happening any time soon”. Although, the source added, production of EOS M cameras and lenses is likely to slow down because of supply issues caused by the pandemic and Canon giving precedence to the EOS R system.

We had no doubt about that and got similar hints from other sources. On the other hand, common sense is already enough to debunk this always again recycled rumor. Ask yourself: why would Canon kill a lineup with bestsellers like the EOS M50? Not to mention that the whole EOS M series is quite popular with consumers. So, Canon is set to kill their best selling mirrorless camera with ab APS-C sensor? We don’t think that is realistic.

The soon-to-come death of the EOS M series is often used to push another weird rumor, that’s Canon releasing an EOS R model with APS-C sensor. We are still not entirely sold on an EOS R with crop sensor, although it’s at least possible. The same rumor suggesting that EOS R with APS-C also claims that Canon has no intention to make RF mount lenses for the APS-C sensor. A bit strange if you think that Canon made a wholesome EF-S lens lineup for their DSLRs with crop sensor.

Also, keep in mind that APS-C centered technology is less expensive than its full frame counterpart, both for the manufacturer and for the consumer. Not only has the manufacturing process of an APS-C imaging sensor lower costs than for FF, the lower costs regard all part that make up an APS-C camera (lenses included). This applies more to DSLRs but it also true for mirrorless to some degree. APS-C technology also means longer reach with telephoto lenses, one of the reasons the EOS 7D series was so popular with wild life photographers. Last but not least: APS-C technology means smaller form size of the camera. Something a lot of users appreciate.

In conclusion, we don’t think Canon will kill the EOS M lineup. There simply is no rational in doing it. Maybe, and only maybe, if Canon really releases an EOS R with APS-C sensor (and dedicated lenses for such a crop system), then it might happen. If it does, it won’t happen in 2021, as rumored, but sometime in the next 5 or more years. If ever.

The Canon EOS M System Is Going To Die. Is It Really?

canon eos m50 mark ii review

A few weeks ago a many times recycled rumor made its rounds again, suggesting Canon will kill the Canon EOS M lineup after 2021. We think this is bs.

Going on since many years, the rumor suggesting the imminent dead of the EOS M system surfaces now and then. But it’s utterly absurd, and good only for clickbait. There is no reason Canon would kill the EOS M lineup. We reached out to our sources and no one told us this might happen.

Why the hell would Canon kill the EOS M system? The EOS M50 is a best seller since it was released, and the EOS M50 Mark II is following on its footsteps. Indeed, the whole EOS M series is very popular. The mere fact that some sites consider it not worth to be mentioned doesn’t prove the end is near for the EOS M. The EOS M50 is a top seller on the US and Japan market. A fact stated by Canon itself.

I don’t think Canon is so dumb to discontinue their best selling mirrorless camera with an APS-C sensor as long as people wants to buy it in large figures. It seems that the only reason the EOS M has to die is because of some snobbish people who wants it to. You know, those characters with a website always bragging with their expensive gear while belittling less expensive cameras and the people using them.

We might be wrong, obviously. But we would be surprised if we are. There is simply no reason Canon would kill the EOS M and it seems calling it dead has no reason than to support another long running and bewildering rumor.

Let us know what you think.

These Are The Canon Cameras We Can Expect To Get Released In 2021

eos r canon cameras

2021 has just started, we all hope it will be better than 2020. And some might also be curious to learn what Canon cameras might get released in 2021. A curated list of the top 2020 rumors has been compiled for your rumors fun and speculations.

An EOS R camera with an APS-C sensor

While we are still having a hard time to buy it, the long running rumor of an EOS R model still surfaces every now and then. Indeed, this rumor started the week after the EOS R was released. Such a possibility was denied by a Canon exec in an interview back in 2018. Everything is possible but for the time being we are not sold on this rumor nor on the imminent dead of the EOS M system. Time will tell and we will see if the rumor gets moved to the next upcoming year as it happened so far. In other words: we do not think this camera will get released in 2021.

High-resolution RF body

Another long running rumor, but one that definitely is going to happen soon. We were first to leak it and there is also a related patent. Moreover, it was later confirmed by a Canon exec. So far this camera is rumored to have a 90MP imaging sensor that can go up to 300MP with pixel shift. The high resolution EOS R was dubbed EOS R5s by the rumor mills community.

Two entry level EOS R bodies

These camera will replace the EOS R and the EOS RP. No specifications have leaked so far but is seems safe to assume that they will both be placed below the EOS R6, with one of them to sell at less than the EOS RP, as another Canon exec suggested. Rumored price tage are $899 and $1499, respectively. Not sure if both will be seen in 2021. Take it with a grain of salt.

An EOS-1D X tier EOS R body

Another rumor with a high chance to become reality in 2021. Canon will release a flagship EOS R camera that is on EOS-1D X level. This too was already confirmed by a Canon exec. The camera was dubbed EOS R1 by the rumor outlets name giving squads.

Canon EOS C50 and EOS C90

Two new Canon Cinema cameras with RF mount. The EOS C50 might come in the first half of 2021, the other one’s release is yet unknown. Canon already released a Cinema camera with RF mount, the EOS C70, and it’s safe more will follow.

A Canon 8K video camera

Already teased many times, this one might definitely get announced in 2021.

So, while these is nothing new we hope you appreciate the sum up of what Canon cameras might come in 2021. Be aware that both the global pandemic and a recent fire at a supply factory might delay some of the announcements. Let us know what you think about this rich and large (and possible) Canon release schedule

Will Canon Give Up The EOS M Lineup After 2021?

Canon EOS M50 Mark II

Bad news for those who like the EOS M system, myself included. A new rumor suggests Canon might not continue the EOS M lineup after 2021.

The EOS M mirrorless system has already been declared dead many times. Now it seems it might eventually happen. According to the rumor, Canon will end the EOS M lineup in favour of two upcoming RF mount cameras with a APS-C sensor (so far only one EOS R with APS-C was rumored).

It’s also rumored that Canon might not release dedicated RF-S lenses (i.e. lenses for the RF mount but only for APS-C sensors). Instead, future lens design will “fill the void of no dedicated APS-C lenses”. Whatever that means. Guess it means that they are designed to work well for both APS-C and FF EOS R cameras. Sort of compromise? The upcoming RF 18-45mm IS STM might be the walk-around lens for an EOS R camera with APS-C sensor.

There will be EOS M cameras on market after 2021, and the EOS M50 Mark II won’t be the last EOS M camera. Stay tuned.

A New Canon Speedlite Might Be On Its Way (the Canon Speedlite EL-10)

canon speedlite el-10

Back In October 2020 Canon announced a new flagship Speedlite, the Canon Speedlite EL-1.

The flagship Speedlite has a flagship price. Good that a new rumor has it that Canon might soon release a more affordable yet new Speedlite flash: the Canon Speedlite EL-10.

The Canon Speedlite El-10 should be announced sometime in 2021, our bet is Q1 or Q2. No specifications so far, expect that it might be possible to use it with rechargeable batteries.

A Speedlite flash between the EL-1 ($1,099 )and EL-100 (currently discounted to $99) would make a lot of sense. Expect this rumor to become reality.

Stay tuned.

Canon EOS R7 With APS-C Sensor Undergoing Field Testing?

eos r canon cameras

Here is a new rumor about the Canon EOS R camera said to have an APS-C sensor and dubbed EOS R7 by the community.

While we are still a bit skeptical about an EOS R with APS-C sensor, the general consensus is that there will indeed be one. Since the very inception of the EOS R this rumor began to make its rounds. Latest has it that the Canon EOS R7 (not an official moniker) is already undergoing testing in the field by a select group of photographers. According to the rumor, the camera looks almost the same as the EOS R6. Specifications are expected to be similar too. Announcement is rumored to happen sometime in 2021.

Is this really going to happen? It seems to be assessed that Canon will not release a replacement for the EOS 7D Mark II, at least not a DSLR. So, an RF mount camera with APS-C sensor will continue the heritage of the EOS 7D series? It’s possible, sure. Still I can’t get rid of some doubts about that. And what does it mean for the EOS M system?

In the past Canon was asked about the possibility of an EOS R camera with APS-C sensor. They neither confirmed nor denied it.

What do you think?
