Canon EOS-1D X Mark III product description:

Ideal for sports and wildlife, the flagship Canon EOS-1D X Mark III DSLR is being engineered and designed using feedback from the worldwide community of EOS-1D X and EOS-1D X Mark II photographers. Continuing Canon’s rich heritage of creating first-rate optical products, the EOS-1D X Mark III offers an enhanced autofocus system, with dramatically improved still and video image quality and communication. When using this camera, professionals will have the confidence they will get ‘the shot’ and can deliver it at a competitive speed – faster than ever before – ideal for the increasingly fast-paced industry.

Need for Speed

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III will be blisteringly fast – offering exceptional precision, reliability, high-performance autofocus and subject tracking – providing photographers with a tool that will help to capture the shot they are chasing. The camera’s new autofocus algorithm will improve stability and tracking when using both the Optical Viewfinder and in Live View shooting mode, using Deep Learning Technology and adapting to help facilitate accurate focus tracking for every shot. When using the optical viewfinder the camera will use a new autofocus sensor, with approximately 28 times the resolution in the center of the EOS-1D X Mark II.

Offering the ability to autofocus in even brighter and darker situations than before and with greater precision, the camera will have a range of autofocus capabilities, which will enable the photographer to get their shot. In Live View mode, users will be able to make use of 525 AF areas using the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system will cover approximately 90×100 percent of the image sensor. The camera will support significantly faster frame rates with full AF and AE, using either the optical viewfinder (up to approximately 16 fps mechanical shutter) or Live View (up to approximately 20 fps mechanical or electronic shutter). Additionally, the camera’s dual CFexpress card slots will enable more than five times the RAW burst depth of its predecessor.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark III

Powered to Dominate

The development of EOS-1D X Mark III is a clear example of Canon’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovative imaging products featuring optically excellent technology. The camera will support an all new, Canon-developed, CMOS sensor and DIGIC processor, that will deliver greater image quality, at even higher ISOs, with the ability to capture stills in 10-bit using the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File) file format. HEIF produces wider dynamic range and greater color representation compared to JPEG. The power of 4K resolution brings stories to life – shoot 4K videos including 4K60p with 10-bit 4:2:2 Canon Log internal recording.

Conveniently Connected

For professionals, content delivery is just as important as image capture – the EOS-1D X Mark III will make it easy, featuring built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth low-energy connectivity in addition to GPS technology. To keep pace with ever-shortening deadlines, the camera will transfer data at more than twice the speed of the EOS-1D X Mark II when using the built-in Ethernet connection, or the new optional wireless file transmitter – the WFT-E9, which is also compatible with Canon’s recently launched Cinema EOS C500 Mark II camera. Coupled with simpler network set-up the camera will greatly enhance the professional workflow.

A Familiar Feel with Improved Attributes

Existing EOS-1D series users will be familiar and comfortable handling the EOS-1D X Mark III allowing seamless navigation with trusted ergonomics – whilst the magnesium alloy body will offer the durability expected from Canon’s EOS-1D cameras. Professional photographers can trust the same impressive build-quality as the EOS-1D X Mark II – with phenomenal weather-sealing, standing up to harsh conditions, including wind, rain and humidity. With incredible low-light shooting capabilities, the camera will now feature select illuminated buttons that allow for precision operation in challenging, dark and dimly lit conditions.

The camera will also offer a new additional control for selecting AF points, built into the AF-ON button, allowing photographers to change AF points on-the-fly for the best composition – further helping to simplify their work. In addition, dramatically improved battery life – with the same LP-E19 – will allow professionals to shoot for longer periods of time, without having to change batteries, helping reduce the chance of missing a shot.

Here Is A Sneak Preview Of The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III (video)

Canon EOS-1D X Mark III rumor

No doubt the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III is coming soon. And obviously Canon’s next top tier professional camera is already in the hands of selected photographers.

Click Video Mag posted a video where they cover a trip to a race track in the Pyrenees in Spain to test a brand new piece of kit, which occurs to be the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III.

To see the EOS-1D X Mark III jump to minute 7:42 in the video below. The sneak preview lasts around 20 seconds, so there is not much to see. And there is something we noticed: the EOS-1D X Mark III is never depicted from the front, only from the side and the back. Does that mean something?

Roger, the guy in the video, explicitly teases Click Video Mag‘s next video episode where they promise to introduce the EOS-1D X Mark III.

What do we know so far about the EOS-1D Mark III?

Despite Canon having already announced the development, we still lack essential bits of intel.

According to Nokishita the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III and the WFT-E9 wireless file transmitter are now listed on Canon’s latest product list.

The release of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III is expected around the beginning of February 2020, and there are no doubts left about that. An authoritative source confirmed it will be at the beginning of 2020, February is the natural choice (CP+ happens). General availability should be ready in April 2020.

Below is the list of what we know for sure so far about the EOS 1D X Mark III:

  • All-new CMOS sensor
  • Dual-pixel 525-point CMOS AF with 90/100% coverage horizontally and vertically
  • New Digic Processor
  • 10-bit HEIF file capture (in addition to JPEG and Raw)
  • Max 16fps capture via viewfinder, and 20fps in live view (with AF)
  • Dual CF Express card slots
  • 10-bit, 4:2:2 4K/60 video with C-Log
  • Backlit buttons

What about sensor resolution?

There is still uncertainty about the sensor resolution. While both 20MP and 24MP are rumored, we think the latter is more likely.

They say it will feature IBIS. Is that true?

A persistent rumor says IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation) might be featured on the EOS 1D X Mark III. We have no doubts that Canon is working on IBIS, given the remarkable collection of patent applications dealing with it and the fact that another Canon exec told the world about. But it’s likely that the first Canon camera to feature it will be a mirrorless, and not the flagship DSLR.

Stay tuned for the next Canon EOS-1D X Mark III rumor (all 1D X Mark III rumors).

Canon Patent Application For RF 24-300mm f/4-5.6 Lens

Canon Patent Application

Canon is working on consumer oriented lenses for the EOS R system, and this Canon patent application seems to confirm the commitment. An upcoming RF lens just leaked through a certification authority.

Canon patent application P2019-219679A (Japan) discusses the optical formula for an RF 24-300mm f/4-5.6 lens. We think it is an RF mount lens since the patent literature refers to a full frame mirrorless camera.

  • Zoom ratio: 11.77
  • Focal length: 24.72 90.83 290.86 mm
  • F number: 4.12 5.00 5.88
  • Half angle of view: 41.19 13.40 4.25
  • Image height: 21.64 21.64 21.64 mm
  • Lens length: 165.57 210.57 255.57 mm

More Canon patent applications are listed here. Some particularly interesting patent applications we think might get into production are these:

Unreleased Canon Lens Appears At Certification Authority (RF mount?)

Top 10 Cameras canon rumors full frame mirrorless camera canon eos r pro eos r canon lens explorers of light

According to Nokishita, a Canon lens for a ILC has been registered at a Russian certification authority. The SKU of the lens is 4111C005AA (image below). Since when are lenses registered at certification authorities?

canon lens

We think this most likely refers to an upcoming RF lens for the Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless system. Or does it refer to the already released RF 85mm f/1.2L DS, mentioned in the image above? Which one we do not know for the time being. Recent rumours suggested Canon is set to release some consumer oriented lenses for the EOS R. If true, this lens might be among them.

Among the next Canon releases we expect the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III (all rumors), already announced development-wise but still shrouded in mystery. The EOS-1D X Mark III is expected for February 2020. There is still uncertainty about the sensor resolution. While both 20MP and 24MP are rumored, we think the latter is more likely.

Canon might also release up to three EOS R bodies in 2020. One will be the high resolution EOS R, also expected for February 202, the other one might be the pro-oriented EOS R, though this one might well slip into 2021. And then there might be the EOS R Mark II in 2020. One of these upcoming EOS R bodies is rumoured to have a hybrid EF/RF mount. Time will tell.

One of the hottest speculation about upcoming Canon cameras concern IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation). Some rumors suggest it will be featured on the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III. We think this is unlikely. There is no reason to doubt that Canon is working on IBIS, given the remarkable collection of patent applications dealing with it and the fact that a Canon exec told the world about. But it’s likely that the first Canon camera to feature it will be a mirrorless camera in the EOS R lineup, and not the flagship DSLR.

Stay tuned for more.
