Canon Patent For A Bunch Of RF Mount f/1.8 Prime Lenses

RF Mount

And yet another Canon patent application dealing with RF mount lenses.

Canon patent application 2020-0326505 (USA) discusses optical formula for a bunch of f/1.8 lenses for the EOS R.

  • 105mm f/1.8
  • 130mm f/1.8
  • 150mm f/1.8

Not unlikely these lenses will hit the market, sooner or later.

Canon EOS R5 Review (a joy in real world use, Dustin Abbott)

Canon Eos R5 Review 8k Video Firmware Updste

Here is another exhaustive Canon EOS R5 review. A camera that’s “a joy in real world use, with only a few minor negatives“, as the reviewer states.

Dustin Abbott posted his full Canon EOS R5 review. As usual the review comes with a huge set of sample pictures, comparison charts, and all the information you might want to know. This is the review I would look for if I was on the fence for the EOS R5. Says Dustin in hist conclusion:

The “thing” that must accompany a Canon release turned out to be the overheating issue, and so it turns out to be not quite a Cine series replacement, though most shooters will probably be delighted with its broad range of video capabilities. Beyond that, however, there’s very little to criticize about the camera. The focus system is immensely powerful, capable of stopping action in an effortless fashion.

It is capable of recording beautiful colors with strong amounts of dynamic range and flexibility for getting the most out of images.

[…]

At the end of the day, however, this is the most versatile camera that Canon has ever produced and in many ways epitomizes the vision of the what a 5 Series camera should be.  Powerful, versatile, and robust.  I’m loving using the Canon EOS R5…I just wish those great RF lenses weren’t so stinkin’ expensive!

The EOS R5 is highly regarded as a stills camera. In particular, the EOS R5 autofocus system seems to be huge leap forwards. My opinion about the EOS R5 overheating hysteria is listed here.

Canon Patent Shows RF Mount Zoom Lens That Could Be For An APS-C EOS R Camera

Aps-c Eos R

Interesting Canon patent application. Various zoom lenses for the EOS R system are discussed, with one being particularly interesting since it seems to point to an APS-C EOS R.

Canon patent application (2020-170102, Japan) discusses optical formulas for zoom lenses for the Canon EOS R system. The patent literature discusses the following zoom lenses:

Look at example 5

As you can see from the table above, there are 24-70mm, 24-116mm, 24-100mm, 27.80mm, and, listed under “Example 5”, a 15-70mm f/4-7.1 zoom lens with an image height that doesn’t work for a full frame sensor on a mirrorless camera. However, the lens is based on the same design principles as the others, so it might be for an APS-C EOS R camera.

If you have a better understanding of the patent (or of Japanese), spotted by asobinet.com, please help me out on this. Is this really a lens for an EOS R camera with an APS-C sensor??

Here Is Canon’s Upcoming Lens Roadmap For The Canon EOS R System

Eos R System

A list of upcoming RF lenses leaked over the web. And it looks very interesting for the EOS R system.

Canon Rumors posted what with some likelihood could be Canon’s upcoming RF lenses roadmap. A lot of lenses that seem to confirm Canon dedication to the EOS R system.

We will most probably see this two lenses first:

  • Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM – small size (like a Coke can), external zoom,
  • Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM – said to be optically better than the EF version and with a better build quality

Then, within 2021, these lense might get announced

  • Canon TS-R 14mm f/4L (a groundbreaking” autofocus tilt-shift lens)
  • Canon TS-R 24mm f/3.5L (another groundbreaking” autofocus tilt-shift lenses)
  • Canon RF 10-24mm f/4L USM
  • Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM
  • Canon RF 24mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro
  • Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L USM
  • Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM
  • Canon RF 135mm f/1.4L USM
  • Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-7.1 IS USM
  • Canon RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM
  • Canon RF 500mm f/4L IS USM
  • Canon RF 600mm f/4L IS USM
  • Canon RF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM
  • Canon RF 1200mm f/8L IS USM.

As you can see there is a lot of lenses coming to the EOS R full frame mirrorless system.

Canon Working On An RF 8-15mm f/4 Fish-eye Zoom Lens, Patent Suggests

Fish-eye

A new Canon patent application suggests the company might have an interesting lens for the EOS R ecosystem up their sleeve.

Hi Lows Note spotted Canon patent application 2020-166234A (Japan), where optical formulas for an RF 8-15mm f/4 fish-eye lens are discussed. The lens seems to be pretty much the mirrorless counterpart to the EF 8-15mm f/4 fish-eye.

  • Zoom ratio: 1.85
  • Focal length: 8.10 12.51 15.01 mm
  • F number: 4.10 4.10 4.10
  • Half angle of view: 90.14 90.45 90.39
  • Image height: 11.50 18.00 21.60 mm
  • Lens length: 123.74 111.21 109.67 mm
  • Back focus: 11.78 20.27 24.66 mm

We think it’s very likely this lens will hit the market, sooner or later. Btw, it’s not the first patent for a fish-eye lens for EOS R.
