Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM Review (improved in almost every way, D. Abbott)

canon rf 50mm f/1.8 STM review

Here is a new Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM review. One of the less expensive lenses for the EOS R, and a classic full frame lens.

Our favourite gear reviewer Dustin Abbott posted his exhaustive Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM review. Form his conclusion:

[…] after spending time with the RF 50mm F1.8, I can also say with confidence that Canon didn’t just “mail it in” by throwing an RF mount on the EF lens.  The RF lens is improved in almost every way.  The build quality is noticeably improved and is far from feeling like a toy like the EF 50mm F1.8 II did.  This feels like a real lens, a finished product.  The same is true of the autofocus performance, where the STM motor in the newest lens is smoother and snappier in performance than the older EF STM lens.  When I reviewed the EF 50mm F1.8 STM, I had to make major micro-adjustments to get accurate focus on my DSLRs, so it is such a liberating thing to not have to worry about focus accuracy on mirrorless.  I just threw the lens on my camera and started shooting…and got great results.

I also threw the RF 50mm F1.8 into the EOS R5 gauntlet with its 45 MP of resolution, and the lens emerged largely unscathed.  Wide open contrast isn’t amazing, and there is a surprising amount of vignette that is now part of the equation, but the lens is capable of producing very nice images with good detail and great bokeh even at wide apertures, and if you stop the lens down, it becomes very sharp.

As usual the review comes with a huge set of sample pictures, comparison charts, and all the information you might want to know. Dustin’s reviews are what I look for when I am about to purchase new gear. And for those who prefer to watch their reviews, Dustin Abbott provides a comprehensive video-review.

Canon RF 600mm f/11 Review (delivers some incredible images, SLR Lounge)

canon rf 600mm f/11 review

Here is a new Canon RF 600mm f/11 Lens review. The RF 600mm f/11 and RF 800mm f/11 made quite a splash when they were announced. Initially seen with skepticism, they are now getting many positive reviews.

This Canon RF 600mm f/11 review comes from SLR Lounge, the Canon RF 600mm f/11 Lens review says the “lens packs a punch despite its weight […] and delivered some incredible images”. From their conclusion:

1) The lens has a tendency to front and back focus, and 2) the f/11 comes with limitations, meaning you’ll want to pair this lens with a solid camera body, like an EOS R5 or R6 or better. The EOS R, in my opinion, was the baseline minimum that you would want. I would also remind you that this is a 600mm fixed focal length lens, a specialist lens, so you really have limited compositional control beyond simply moving closer or farther away on your own two feet, and you may be limited, depending on the kind of scenes/locations that you’re shooting in.

If you’re thinking to yourself, “Well, I would really love to have this lens to go traveling with,” then you might reconsider. For those of you that like to travel and you still want telephoto capability, I would recommend something like a 70-200mm, or a 100-300mm lens, where you still have range. If you’re shooting birds or animals, where distance is a common issue, then the 600mm lens is going to be perfect for you.

And if you prefer, here is the 13 minutes video review.

If you are interested there is an interview with the engineers who developed these lens. Also, Canon already said there will be more such lenses. For more Canon RF 800mm f/11 and RF 600mm f/11 review stuff have a look here.

Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM Review, And Comparison With EF 50mm f/1.8

canon rf 50mm f/1.8 STM review

Here is a new Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM review along with some comparison to the EF version of the Nifty-Fifty.

Coming from well known camera reviewer Gordon Laing, the video review below looks at at performance of the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM for EOS R systems and compares it to the iconic EF 50mm f/1.8. Sample images are here, and that’s also where you find Gordon’s written review. From his conclusion:

The Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM is a low-cost standard lens for the EOS R mirrorless system which, like the EF versions before it, provides an affordable entry into the World of prime lenses, low-light photography and shallow depth-of-field effects.

It may cost roughly double that of the EF 50mm f1.8 STM, but at around 200 dollars or pounds it becomes by far the cheapest native lens in the RF system to date, making it tempting for anyone looking for a second lens to complement an existing kit-zoom. It’s smaller than the EF version when you take a mirrorless adapter into account, and while the overall style and rendering is similar, the newer RF version is noticeably sharper across more of the frame when wide-open.

Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM Review (can it offer superior image quality?)

Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM review

Here is a new, good Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM review. This relatively affordable lens for the EOS R is gaining momentum among reviewers.

Coming from Christopher Frost, the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM review investigates image stabilization, macro ability and overall image quality, among other stuff. Image quality can’t be that bad if this lens scored better than the EF 85mm f/1.2 at DxOMark”s test.

The Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM is a very good performer, other reviews confirmed it. This lens is just a no brainer for any EOS R owner.

These Are The Canon Cameras We Can Expect To Get Released In 2021

eos r canon cameras

2021 has just started, we all hope it will be better than 2020. And some might also be curious to learn what Canon cameras might get released in 2021. A curated list of the top 2020 rumors has been compiled for your rumors fun and speculations.

An EOS R camera with an APS-C sensor

While we are still having a hard time to buy it, the long running rumor of an EOS R model still surfaces every now and then. Indeed, this rumor started the week after the EOS R was released. Such a possibility was denied by a Canon exec in an interview back in 2018. Everything is possible but for the time being we are not sold on this rumor nor on the imminent dead of the EOS M system. Time will tell and we will see if the rumor gets moved to the next upcoming year as it happened so far. In other words: we do not think this camera will get released in 2021.

High-resolution RF body

Another long running rumor, but one that definitely is going to happen soon. We were first to leak it and there is also a related patent. Moreover, it was later confirmed by a Canon exec. So far this camera is rumored to have a 90MP imaging sensor that can go up to 300MP with pixel shift. The high resolution EOS R was dubbed EOS R5s by the rumor mills community.

Two entry level EOS R bodies

These camera will replace the EOS R and the EOS RP. No specifications have leaked so far but is seems safe to assume that they will both be placed below the EOS R6, with one of them to sell at less than the EOS RP, as another Canon exec suggested. Rumored price tage are $899 and $1499, respectively. Not sure if both will be seen in 2021. Take it with a grain of salt.

An EOS-1D X tier EOS R body

Another rumor with a high chance to become reality in 2021. Canon will release a flagship EOS R camera that is on EOS-1D X level. This too was already confirmed by a Canon exec. The camera was dubbed EOS R1 by the rumor outlets name giving squads.

Canon EOS C50 and EOS C90

Two new Canon Cinema cameras with RF mount. The EOS C50 might come in the first half of 2021, the other one’s release is yet unknown. Canon already released a Cinema camera with RF mount, the EOS C70, and it’s safe more will follow.

A Canon 8K video camera

Already teased many times, this one might definitely get announced in 2021.

So, while these is nothing new we hope you appreciate the sum up of what Canon cameras might come in 2021. Be aware that both the global pandemic and a recent fire at a supply factory might delay some of the announcements. Let us know what you think about this rich and large (and possible) Canon release schedule
