Canon Patent: RF 9-18mm f/4 And RF 10-18mm f/4 Lenses

Canon Patent

Another Canon patent application that was published yesterday.

Canon patent application 2023099389 (Japan, published 7/13/2023) discusses optical formulas and methods for two ultra wide zoom lenses.

From the patent literature:

A compact and lightweight zoom lens that has a wide angle of view and high optical performance over the entire zoom range is provided.

Description of the Related Art

In recent years, zoom lenses used in imaging apparatuses are required to have a wide angle of view and high optical performance as imaging apparatuses have become more sophisticated. Further, as a zoom lens having a wide angle of view at the wide-angle end, a negative lead type zoom lens in which a lens group having a negative refractive power precedes the zoom lens is known.
However, in the zoom lens disclosed in Patent Document 1, the focal length of the first lens group is set to be small in order to widen the angle of view. . In addition, the back focus and the refractive power of the first lens group are not appropriate, and it is difficult to further reduce the diameter of the front lens and shorten the total length. The zoom lens disclosed in Patent Document 2 has a short back focus and a refractive power arrangement suitable for shortening the total length. However, the lens groups succeeding the first lens group all have positive refractive power, and it is difficult to narrow the position of the front principal point toward the first lens group when viewed as the entire succeeding group. is difficult.
In order to obtain a compact and lightweight zoom lens that has high optical performance over the entire zoom range while achieving a wide angle, the refractive power and lens configuration of the first lens group, and the lens groups following the first lens group It is important to set the refracting power and placement position of the lens appropriately.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

It is an object of the present invention to provide a compact and lightweight zoom lens that has a wide angle of view and high optical performance over the entire zoom range, and an imaging apparatus having the zoom lens.

Canon Patent: 10-20mm f/4, 9-18mm f/4, And 11-22mm f/4 For RF mount

Canon Patent

A new Canon patent, and as almost all Canon patents of the last two or three years it is for RF mount lenses.

Canon patent 2023005851 (Japan, published 1/18/2023) discusses optical formulas for three wide angle lenses for the RF mount:

  • 10-20mm f/4
  • 9-18mm f/4
  • 11-22mm f/4

The 11-22mm in the list above could well be the already rumored 11-22mm lens. From the patent literature:

An object of the present invention is to realize a negative lead zoom lens that is compact and has a wide angle of view and yet has high optical performance in a wide zoom range.

Example 1

  • Focal length: 10.30-19.40
  • F-value: 4.12
  • Half angle of view: 62.03-48.12
  • Image height: 19.40-21.64
  • Overall length: 129.14-132.69
  • Back focus: 15.09

Example 2

  • Focal length: 9.27-17.46
  • F-value: 4.12
  • Half angle of view: 64.34-51.10
  • Image height: 19.30-21.64
  • Total length: 124.52-125.00
  • Back focus: 15.37

Example 3

  • Focal length: 11.33-23.28
  • F-value: 4.12
  • Half angle of view: 59.58-42.90
  • Image height: 19.30-21.64
  • Total length: 130.00-131.90
  • Back focus: 16.34

Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Review (best bang for buck ultra-wide zoom)

The Phoblographer posted their full review of the Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 (Canon Mount).

From the conclusion:

Likes

– Fast maximum aperture

– Excellent image quality

– Versatile ultra-wide angle focal range

– Moisture resistance

Dislikes

– Not compatible with conventional lens filters

– Big and heavy

Although US$1,299 is certainly not an inconsequential sum of money, the Tamron SP 15-30mm f2.8 Di VC USD G2 is one of the best bang for your buck when it comes to ultra-wide angle zooms currently available on the market. While Tamron’s original 15-30mm f2.8 was an impressive lens in its own right, the addition of moisture resistance along with enhanced vibration compensation and improved lens coatings are certainly welcomed improvements. We just wish Tamron would put the lens on a diet so that it was less cumbersome to use, but that would probably require that they bend the laws of physics. With that said, we’d still recommend this lens to anyone that’s in the market for a versatile ultra-wide angle zoom lens.

The Phoblographer’s review comes with a huge set of sample pictures and analyses all optical aspects of the lens.
