Canon’s APS-C Mirrorless Cameras Still Top Ranked In Japan

The Canon EOS M50 and EOS M100 are best sellers in Japan, especially the former.

No surprise that latest BCNRetail data for May 2019 confirm once more that Canon is doing very good in the APS-C mirrorless market, and not just in Japan.

The EOS M50 has a market share of 20.5% (most sold), the Sony a6400 has 11.5% (second most sold), and the EOS M100 has 7.8% (third ranked).

Back in February we reported that Canon might replace the EOS 80D and the EOS 7D Mark II with one new camera for both lineups. The camera would be the Canon EOS 90D.

Rumors following suggested that the EOS 7D lineup is set to be abandoned by Canon and that instead we might see a mirrorless offering.

Latest rumors address one of the strongest criticism to Canon’s implementation of 4K video on APS-C cameras, i.e. the evil crop factor, stirring heated discussions on the web. It seems the next Canon APS-C DSLR, which most likely will be the EOS 90D, will record 4K video at 32MP and with no significant crop applied.

Canon patent application 2019-087397 (Japan) discusses how to make IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation) work with lens-based image stabilisation. Not an easy task, I guess.

This is not the first IBIS-related patent filed by Canon. It’s now safe to assume that Canon will indeed implement IBIS in a future mirrorless camera (both EOS M and EOS R?).

Given the quantity of Canon lenses with IS it was to expect that Canon is interested to make IBIS wok with image-stabilised lenses.
