Canon Patent: 11mm F2, 13mm F2, 22mm F2, And 30mm F2 Lenses For RF-S Mount

Canon Patent

Here is a new Canon patent application, for a bunch of fast primes for the RF-S mount.

Canon patent application P2023130885 (Japan, published 9/21/2023) discusses optical formulas for RF-S mount prime lenses:

  • 11mm F2
  • 13mm F2
  • 22mm F2
  • 30mm F2

From the patent literature:

An object of the present invention is to provide a rear focus optical system that is compact and capable of good aberration correction.

BACKGROUND ART

In imaging, it is required to suppress the generation of noise during zooming and focusing. In order to suppress noise during focusing, the rear focus (inner focus) method, in which focusing is performed by moving the lens group closest to the image side than the lens group closest to the object side, is recommended because it provides the best sound isolation effect from the object side lens. suitable.

Rear focus type optical systems are also required to be compact and have good aberration correction. In order to realize such an optical system, it is necessary to appropriately set the lens arrangement and the focal length of each lens.

The present invention provides a rear focus type optical system that is compact and capable of good aberration correction, and an imaging device equipped with the same.

Example 1

  • Focal length: 13.40
  • F value: 2.06
  • Half angle of view: 43.01

  • Back focus: 12.43

Canon Patent: RF-S 10-14mm F3.5-4 Lens For APS-C

Canon Patent

After a long time, here is a new Canon patent application.

Canon patent application 2023066202 (Japan, published 5/15/2023) discusses optical formulas for a RF-S 10-14mm F3.5-4 lens, i.e. a lens for the RF-mount and APS-C imaging sensors.

From the patent literature:

An object of the present invention is to provide a zoom lens capable of reducing the occurrence of ghost while having high optical performance.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Field of the Invention The present invention relates to zoom lenses and the like, and is suitable for imaging devices such as digital video cameras, digital still cameras, broadcast cameras, and silver halide film cameras.
Description of the Related Art

Wide-angle lenses are widely used for landscape photography, astrophotography, and the like. A wide-angle lens is required to achieve high optical performance while widening the angle of view.
In the zoom lens disclosed in Patent Document 1, since the opening angle of the first lens is large, unwanted light reflected obliquely from the lens surface of the second lens on the object side becomes an image of the first lens. It was sometimes reflected on the lens surface on the side and reached the image plane. When such unnecessary light reaches the image plane, it is undesirable because it causes a ghost image on the photograph.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a zoom lens capable of reducing the occurrence of ghost while having high optical performance.

Example 1

  • Focal Length: 15.45-29.15
  • F-value: 4.60-6.32
  • Half angle of view: 49.36-36.19
  • Image height: 18.00-21.33
  • Overall length: 115.26-107.01
  • Back focus: 13.50

Example 2

  • Focal length: 9.97-14.64
  • F-value: 3.50-4.23
  • Half angle of view: 49.63-41.54
  • Image height: 11.72-12.97
  • Overall length: 72.73-71.78
  • Back focus: 10.06-14.3

Is Canon set to announce an ultra-wide lens for the RF-S mount? It appears so.

The source of the rumor has been…:

[…] told that “one of” the next lenses announced from Canon will be an ultra-wide for the RF-S mount. We are are going to assume that the lens will be some kind of variation of the terrific Canon EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM.

We think it is very likely Canon has such a lens on their release plan.

This happens every time Canon releases a new camera: lots of fake rumors trying to capitalize on the hype. This time it is an alleged RF-S 22mm f/2 STM lens.

An image of an alleged RF-S 22mm f/2 STM pancake lens surfaced on a website already known to spread false rumors. Our sources confirmed the image is not real. You can see the fake RF-S 22mm f/2 STM lens on top.

Are These The Next Canon RF-S Lenses (22mm, 32mm, 11-55mm, 55-250mm, 6-55mm)?

Canon RF-S Lenses

As usual a few days after the announcement of a new Canon camera, a new rumor surfaces suggesting Canon RF-S lenses for the new Canon camera.

The Canon EOS R7 and EOS R10, Canon’s first EOS R models with an APS-C imaging sensor, have been announced a fews days ago. Along with the EOS R7 and EOS R10, two RF-S lenses have also been announced. And here is the list of the next RF-S lenses that might get announced:

  • RF-S 22mm F2 STM
  • RF-S 11-55mm F4-4.5 IS STM
  • RF-S 55-250mm F4.5-7.1 IS STM
  • RF-S 6-55mm F2.8 IS USM
  • RF-S 32mm F1.4 STM

Hard to say how reliable the list is. Some of the lenses are just “common sense” lenses, meaning it is very likely Canon will announce them, sooner or later (22mm & 32mm, for instance). Generaly speaking, the list above reminds the EOS M system. Nothing strange in Canon replicating their EF-M lenses to the RF-S system.

What are your thoughts about the RF-S lenses list? Reliable?
