Upcoming High Resolution Canon EOS R Might Have Up to 80MP

We have been told (thanks) that the upcoming high resolution Canon EOS R camera might have a resolution of 80MP.

We are not sure what to think about this, for the time being. The last rumor we got about the high res EOS R body, was that it will have resolution that’s higher than the new Sony a7R IV (having 61MP).

The rumored resolution for this EOS R body has always been something around 75MP. A resolution of 80MP is new to us. However, it’s possible. Canon for sure has the know how and the manufacturing facilities to make such a sensor. Moreover, it seems quite clear that Canon wants to regain the crown of full frame sensor resolution.

As you probably know, we think that Canon will not release a new iteration of the EOS 5Ds/EOS 5Ds R. Instead, most likely, Canon will release a mirrorless version to replace these cameras. Given that the EOS 5Ds/EOS 5Ds R have a resolution of 50MP, and given the fact they were released in 2015, a jump to 80MP doesn’t seem that much a stretch. And it’s just 5MP more than the so far rumored resolution. Finally, we have reasons to believe the upcoming high res EOS R has already undergone field testing.

Canon Patent For 35mm f/1.2 Lens For EOS R System

That’s a bit weird. After the rumor about a possible RF 35mm f/1.2L lens we spotted a patent describing such a lens. We wonder if the source of the rumor also found the patent.

Canon patent application 2019-128526 describes the optical formula for a 35mm f/1.2 prime lenses for the EOS R system. How to correct chromatic aberrations with the use of low dispersion glass is also discussed in the patent application.

Is Canon set to release another f/1.2 lens for the EOS R system in the near future?

After the RF 50mm f/1.2L and the RF 85mm f/1.2L Canon night announce a 35mm f/1.2L lens. This sounds plausible to us (despite the fact there are too many low reliable RF mount rumors around). First, 35mm is a very classic focal length on full frame (Canon already released the relatively inexpensive RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro). Next, another f/1.2L lens makes sense for a system like the EOS R, designed to mount high performing optics. Indeed, we are pretty sure the rumored RF 35mm f/1.2L will not be the last f/1.2 lens for the EOS R. Maybe a 24mm f/1.2L is next?

The Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L lens is said to be released somewhen in 2020. Canon still has to release a bunch of lenses they already announced. If this lens is going to be released for sure it will not be a lens for people on a budget.

We expect Canon to make an announcement on August 28th. The Canon EOS 90D will be announced, possibly along with the EOS M6 Mark II and some lenses for the EOS M system. The rumored high resolution EOS R body will most likely be announced later. This camera will replace the EOS 5Ds/5Ds R.

Next Canon EOS R Will Have Higher Resolution Than Sony a7R IV

We have been tipped with a rumor about the upcoming high resolution Canon EOS R body.

We already had a bunch of rumors about the high res EOS R, this one is not really adding something to the heap. The source stated that the upcoming EOS R will have a resolution “way beyond the Sony a7R IV“.

The Sony a7R IV was announced a few weeks ago and sports a resolution of 61MP. Previous high res EOS R rumors suggested a resolution between 60 and 75MP. If the resolution is going to be “beyond” the a7R IV, then I guess the 75MP might nail it. That Canon will release such a camera is a sure thing, confirmed by no less than Canon execs. We also know that most likely Canon has already field-tested the high res EOS R camera. According to the source, Canon is set to become the alpha dog in the mirrorless yard.

We expect Canon to announce the high resolution EOS R body in 2019. We have been tipped with Fall as time frame but can not confirm it for sure for the time being. Most likely Canon will not announce the high res EOS R body along with the Canon EOS 90D and possibly a new EOS M camera on August 28th. Some new EF-M lenses might also be announced. And what about the RF mount lenses Canon already announced (development) and didn’t so far release? They’re on their way. Canon said they will release them in 2019 and there is no reason to doubt it.
