Canon RF 14-35mm F/4L IS Review (a beauty delivering lovely results)

Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS review

Here is a Canon RF 14-35mm F/4L IS review. A rather enthusiastic review, we might add.

At a glance:

  • RF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/4 to f/22
  • Three UD Elements
  • Three Aspherical Elements
  • Air-Sphere and Fluorine Coatings
  • Nano USM AF System
  • Optical Image Stabilizer
  • Customizable Control Ring
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm

ePhotozine posted their full Canon RF 14-35mm F/4L IS review. They gave the lens a 5/5 rating and an “editor’s choice” mention. From their conclusion:

Some lenses just gel and just get on with the job, performing flawlessly and smoothly and not getting in the way of image-making. This is such a lens; what a beauty it is and what lovely results it delivers.

The extra 1mm compared to the existing 15-35mm lens should not be underestimated, as such a difference is much more significant in an ultra-wide than, say, the difference between a 100mm and 105mm lens would be. The loss of 1 stop of speed does mean a lighter, more compact lens that also costs significantly less. This makes a good choice for travel photography.

In summary, a superb offering from Canon and without doubt an ‘Editor’s Choice’.

Canon Patent: 60-600mm f/4.5-8, 70-700mm f/4.7-8 And 80-800mm f/5.2-9 For RF Mount

canon patent

A new Canon patent application for RF mount super telephoto lenses.

Canon patent application 2022-53697 (Japan) discusses optical formulas for three super telephoto lenses, all for the RF mount:

  • 60-600mm f/4.5-8
  • 70-700mm f/4.7-8
  • 80-800mm f/5.2-9

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens capable of supporting a high-magnification telephoto zoom and having good optical performance in the entire zoom range, an image pickup device having the same, and an image pickup system.

In recent years, there has been a demand for a telephoto lens having a long focal length or a zoom lens capable of shooting up to a telephoto lens, which is different from a smartphone camera. In recent years, so-called mirrorless cameras without a quick return mirror have been proposed, but since the main body of the mirrorless camera is thin, compact and lightweight, a compact and lightweight interchangeable lens suitable for the mirrorless camera is required.

Example 1

  • Focal length: 61.50-585.00
  • F value: 4.46-8.16
  • Half angle of view: 19.38-2.12
  • Image height: 258.90-346.50
  • Overall length: 258.90-346.50
  • Back focus: 30.00-90.50

Example 2

  • Focal length: 70.00-682.00
  • F value: 4.76-8..16
  • Half angle of view: 17.18-1.82
  • Image height:
  • Overall length: 271.00-361.00
  • Back focus: 31.22-97.50

Example 3

  • Focal length: 81.60-784.00
  • F value: 5.23-9.18
  • Half angle of view: 14.85-1.58
  • Image height: 21.64
  • Overall length: 274.33-371.01
  • Back focus: 32.48-105.97

Canon RF Mount Lenses Might See A Price Increase After April 7, 2022

canon rumors canon news eos r7 mark ii

Will Canon RF lenses soon be more expensive? Some hints have surfaced that this might indeed be the case, at least in Japan.

That’s the rumor reported by asobinet.com. Prices might increased “several thousand yen to tens of thousands of yen” (10,000 Yen are approximately $81) from April 7, 2022. If this price increase is going to happen in Japan, it will likely happen on other markets too.

Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS Review (performance generally excellent, D. Abbott)

canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS review

Here is a new Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS review for you. The RF 100-500mm is a remarkable lens, with many enthusiastic reviews.

At a glance:

  • RF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/4.5-7.1 to f/32-54
  • One Super UD Element, Six UD Elements
  • Dual Nano USM AF System
  • Optical Image Stabilizer
  • Weather-Sealed Design, Fluorine Coating
  • Customizable Control Ring
  • Rotating Zoom Ring, Torque Adjustment
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm
  • Compatible with RF Extenders

Dustin Abbott posted his exhaustive Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS review. From his conclusion:

[the RF 100-500mm] builds on the very strong foundation of the EF 100-400L II while offering some real improvements. Most notable is the additional 100mm of zoom range. The fact that the RF 100-500L reaches 500mm makes it a bit of a unicorn, somewhere between the 100-400mm and 150-600mm lens range. That extra 100mm of reach means that more photographers will feel like they can get sufficient reach without resorting to using a teleconverter and allows them to benefit from the smaller, more portable body style of the 100-400mm type lens

All […] aspects of performance are generally excellent. The build and handling is good, the autofocus is excellent, and, as noted, there aren’t really any flaws in the optical performance. My chief criticisms center on the surprisingly small maximum aperture on the telephoto end and the only partial compatibility with extenders (from 300-500mm only). I suspect both of these flaws are probably the sacrifices that were made at the altar of keeping the lens compact. But the price point of about $2900 is going to be the primary gatekeeper.

As usual Dustin Abbott’s reviews come with sample images, comparison charts, and all the information you might want to know. Dustin’s reviews are what I look for when I am about to purchase new gear. As usual Dustin Abbott also releases a complete video review. See below.

Are Super Telephotos With DO and the EOS R1 Coming?

canon rumors canon news eos r7 mark ii

A new supercharged rumor emerged from the interweb of rumor mills. The EOS R1 and not less than 5 super telephoto lenses for the RF mount.

Let’s first see the lenses. All rumored to have DO (Diffractive Optics):

  • RF 400mm f/3.5 DO IS
  • RF 400mm f/4 DO IS
  • RF 500mm f/4.5 DO IS
  • RF 500mm f/5 DO IS
  • RF 800mm f/9.5 DO IS

All plausible lenses. Why Canon should put these on the market all together is another question (or another rumor). The source mentions prototypes, so likely not all the lenses are meant to hit the shelves.

The source of the rumor also claims that Canon might announce these super telephoto lenses along with the long rumored EOS R1. Maybe just a development announcement. The usual supply chain and similar are issues are also mentioned.

All in all we think there is little beef in this rumor. We already know with good confidence that Canon might release the EOS R1in 2022. As for the lenses, to us it seems a mixed bag of wishful thinking and some lenses that sooner or later will in any case be released. So, not much you can do wrong with this rumor.

Stay tuned.

The Affordable Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM Gets Praise From DxOMark

rf 16mm f/2.8

The Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM for the EOS R system got DxOMarked and it didn’t score bad at all. This is not the first very positive review this lens gets.

Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM at a glance:

  • RF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/2.8 to f/22
  • One Aspherical Element
  • Super Spectra Coating
  • STM Stepping AF Motor
  • Customizable Control Ring
  • Rounded 7-Blade Diaphragm

DxOMark gives the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM a score of 30. From their conclusion (emphasis mine):

With the introduction of the Canon RF 16mm F2.8 STM, Canon continues to explore new and innovative lenses for the RF mount. In an effort to reduce the optical complexity, thereby driving down the size, weight and cost, lens correction profiles make a lot of sense. Even without taking software correction into account, in our DXOMARK Lens test, the Canon RF 16mm F2.8 STM performs very well in certain key areas. It has, for example, similar sharpness and transmission to the larger and pricier Zeiss Distagon T* 15mm F2.8, while being much smaller and lighter. More importantly, especially for anyone on a tight budget, it’s around one-eighth of the price of the Zeiss and around the same price as the Samyang 14mm F2.8, making the Canon RF 16mm F2.8 STM a highly tempting option.

Head over to DxOMark for test charts and more

This is a little gem only Canon can make at this price. The Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM sells at $299:
