Canon Patent: 14mm, 16mm, 18mm, 20mm f/2.8 Lenses For Mirrorless System

Canon Patent

A new week, a new Canon patent application. Like prime lenses? Here are a bunch that might be available soon.

Canon patent application P2022085382 (Japan) discusses optical formulas for the following prime lenses for the RF mount:

  • 14mm f/2.8
  • 16mm f/2.8
  • 18mm f/2.8
  • 20mm f/2.8

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical system having high optical performance in a small size and light weight in a wide-angle lens, and an image pickup apparatus having the same.

BACKGROUND ART: As a shooting optical system having a wide shooting angle, an optical system having a negative refractive power is arranged on the object side, and an optical system having a positive refractive power is arranged on the image side, so-called retrofocus. A type of photographic optical system is known and is used, for example, in a single focus wide-angle lens.

Further, in digital cameras and video cameras, the number of pixels of solid-state image sensors such as CCDs and CMOS sensors is increasing, and high optical performance including chromatic aberration is required for photographing lenses, and miniaturization is also progressing.

In recent years, in a wide-angle lens system used in an image pickup apparatus, a wide angle of view is required in order to enable shooting in a wider range while the entire lens is small.

Generally, in a wide-angle lens, a wide angle of view is realized by arranging an optical system having a negative refractive power on the object side. In order to widen the angle of view, it is necessary to increase the negative refractive power on the object side, but as the radius of curvature of the lens becomes smaller, the lens processing accuracy deteriorates and the image generated mainly by off-axis rays It causes curvature of field and deterioration of chromatic aberration of magnification. In order to solve these problems, it is necessary to increase the lens diameter on the object side and increase the number of lenses, which is not preferable. In order to reduce the lens diameter, widen the angle of view, and achieve high optical performance, it is necessary to properly arrange the aperture and appropriately arrange the negative refractive power of the optical system arranged on the object side of the aperture. You will need it.

Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM Review (good sharpness, nice bokeh & pleasing rendering)

RF 800mm F/11 IS STM Review

Here is a fresh Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM review.

At a glance:

  • RF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Fixed f/11 Aperture
  • Retractable, Locking Lens Barrel
  • Gapless Dual-Layer Diffractive Optics
  • STM Stepping AF Motor
  • Optical Image Stabilizer
  • Customizable Control Ring
  • Compatible with RF Extenders

The Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM Review comes from Admiring Light. The review is rather positive, comes with sample pictures. From their conclusion:

The Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM continues the trend of unique and relatively high quality consumer-grade lenses from Canon. […] When the lens was first announced, like many I dismissed it immediately as too slow and limited. If you are in that camp, and you want a lightweight and compact lens with a lot of reach, I would strongly recommend trying out this lens.

I was quite pleased to see that image quality is very good for such an optic. While not reaching the lofty heights of Canon’s big white supertelephotos, the RF 800mm f/11 produces images with good sharpness, nice bokeh and an overall pleasing rendering that punches above its price point and weight. The biggest compromise for that size, cost and reach is the fixed f/11 aperture, which means that this lens is going to require higher ISOs for fast shutter speeds, especially in lower light situations. The slow aperture also limits the autofocus area, which can make it a little more difficult to track subjects.

Also interesting: an interview with the engineers who developed the lens. Also, Canon already said there will be more such lenses. For more Canon RF 800mm f/11 review stuff have a look here.

  • RF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/5.6 to f/45
  • One UD Element, One Aspherical Element
  • Super Spectra Coating
  • Nano USM AF Motor
  • Maximum Magnification: 0.41x at 400mm
  • Optical Image Stabilizer
  • Customizable Control Ring
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm

ePhotozine posted their full Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS review. And like the other reviews we featured, this one too is rather fond of the lens. They gave the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS a 4.5/5 rating and a “Highly Recommended”. From their conclusion:

Canon RF users are being treated here with a super lens, with real pulling power to bring in those more distant subjects, plus the bonus of having an impressive close-up ability. And all at a highly competitive price. If only there was weather resistance then it really would be hard to beat.

Lenses that go beyond 300mm have always had a serious price penalty, but it does look as though this is now breaking down and bringing that 400mm reach more within a reasonable budget.

For the Canon RF user, this lens looks to be a bit of a no-brainer, with most of the right features, the right quality and the right price. ‘Highly Recommended’.

Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS Review (excellent all-day walk-around lens)

Canon RF 14-35mm F/4L IS Review

Here is a new Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS review.

At a glance:

  • RF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/4 to f/22
  • Three UD Elements
  • Three Aspherical Elements
  • Air-Sphere and Fluorine Coatings
  • Nano USM AF System
  • Optical Image Stabilizer
  • Customizable Control Ring
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm

Photography Blog posted their Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS review. They gave the lens a 4.5/5 rating and a “Highly Recommended”. From their conclusion:

Optically, both the centre and edge sharpness are very high throughout all of its focal length range. Sure, you don’t get the faster maximum aperture of f/2.8 offered by the RF 14-35mm F4L IS USM and therefore quite the same shallow depth-of-field effects, but this lens is much smaller, lighter and crucially cheaper whilst offering the same build quality and feature set.

Chromatic aberrations are almost completely absent, distortion is very well controlled, and flare is notably absent even when shooting directly into the sun. The only notable optical issue is some obvious vignetting at 14mm.

[…] In summary, the RF 14-35mm F4L IS USM is an excellent all-day walk-around addition to the Canon RF lens range that we’d recommend to most users of the system, unless you’re absolutely sure that you really do need the maximum F/2.8 aperture of the RF 15-35mm F2.8L IS USM and you don’t mind paying the significant extra for it.
