Canon EOS R5 Registered At Certification Authority, has 5GHz WiFi

Canon EOS R5 Autofocus

The Canon EOS R5 already surfaced at certification authorities.

The camera named DS126838 has now been confirmed to be the upcoming Canon EOS R5, courtesy of Nokishita. The registration showed up at a Korean certification authority.

What do we know about the Canon EOS R5?

Quite a bit. Canon announced the development months ago, and then later on released a second press communication to stop “fantasy speculations” about their upcoming game changer. We also know that Canon sees the EOS R5 as a mirrorless 5-series camera. And we know that there might be some delays because of the global pandemic. A lot of product pictures are also available.

Summing up everything, here is what we know about the EOS R5:

  • 45mp full frame CMOS sensor
  • IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation)5 stops with IBIS alone
    • 7-8 stops of correction when used with in-lens stabilization
  • 8K video with 29.97fps (30fps)
  • No-Crop on 8K video
  • Dual Pixel AF available in 8K
  • 4K@120fps
  • 4K@60fps
  • Internal recording
  • Animal detection autofocus – tracks animal subjects (dogs, cats, birds, etc.) by detecting the body, face, or eye of the subject.
  • 12fps mechanical, 20fps electronic
  • Scroll wheel added to the back
  • No touch bar
  • Liveview/Movie toggle like previous EOS DSLRs
  • Larger capacity battery, but looks like the LP-E6
  • Built-in 5GHz WiFi
  • New battery, but the same shape and compatibility as the EOS 5D Mark IV
  • Shipping in July 2020

Canon EOS M Rumor: Two New Cameras And Some Primes To Be Released In 2020

Canon Eos M Rumor

A Canon EOS M rumor surfaced that’s very similar to a rumor we posted in February 2020.

It’s suggested that Canon might release two new EOS M bodies in 2020. One of these could likely be the Canon EOS M60 (the replacement for the EOS M50, might also be named EOS M50 Mark II). The other one could be the Canon EOS M5 Mark II. We reported back in February that Canon might announce the M5 II in October 2020 and the EOS M60 at the beginning of 2021.

The new Canon EOS M rumor mentions also the possibility that Canon might release two prime lenses for the EOS M system. One of these could be the EF-M 52mm f/2 STM we reported in February 2020. Our rumor mentioned a EF-M 18-45mm f/2-4 IS STM, which is not mentioned in the new rumor.

Upcoming Canon announcements:

We expect Canon to announce a new Cinema camera on April 20, 2020, during a livestreamed conference, most likely the Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark III. The EOS R5 will not be announced on April 20, 2020, we expect the EOS R5 announcement before Summer 2020.

Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS Review (a good travel lens)

Canon RF 24-240mm F/4-6.3 IS Review

Here is a Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS review.

Dustin Abbott reviewed the Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS, an affordable and versatile all-in-one zoom lens for the Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless system. This seems to be the perfect travel lens for EOS R/RP owners.

From his conclusion:

The Canon RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM is not going to set any records for performance, but that’s not what it was designed for.  It was designed for people who don’t like to change lenses all the time and want a lens for their new mirrorless camera that can do a little bit of everything.

[…] It is also for travelers who want to be able to shoot everything from landscapes to telephoto shots and not have to mess with lugging a bag full of lenses around all day.

[…] It is one of the few lenses on the RF mount to date that don’t completely break the bank, and it turns the EOS R/RP/future body into a flexible platform for capturing a wide variety of situations in either stills or video. It has a competent IS and AF system and good enough optics to deliver a lot of great pictures. Learn to use it well and you can mitigate its shortcomings. I have to admit that despite having a kit full of great lenses, a lens like the RF24-240mm appeals to me for the simple reality of its flexibility.

Dustin Abbott’s review comes with a rich set of sample pictures, and as usual with the full review in video (below). Enjoy.

Canon Might Release A RF Mount Cinema Camera Soon, Report

EOS C100 Mark II Rf Mount Cinema

A Cinema camera with RF mount might be on the horizon, according to latest reports.

A new rumor suggests Canon is already actively working on a new product line, a Cinema camera with RF mount. It seems Canon could place this RF mount Cinema camera on the same spot as the Canon Cinema EOS C100 Mark II. The form factor and the design might resemble the XC camcorder lineup,

Is Canon testing a new, possible market by releasing a RF mount camcorder, just to see how the demand will be? Possible. Moreover, it’s clear that the RF mount is set to shape Canon’s future. A RF Cinema lineup will come to stay, sooner or later.

Interview With Astrophotographer Tony Hallas About The Canon EOS Ra

Canon Eos Ra Astrophotography

If you never heard about the Canon EOS Ra, it’s a modified EOS R camera and Canon’s full frame mirrorless offering for astrophotography enthusiasts.

The EOS Ra was built off the EOS R system combining new features, such as four times greater transmittance of hydrogen-alpha Hα rays (656.3 nm wavelength) through an infrared cutoff filter, which helps capturing high-precision images of the deep-red wavelengths emitted by nebulae in vivid color, without any special camera alterations. On board is also a 30x live view mode for highly precise manual focusing.

The video below by CanonUSA on Youtube features an interview with astrophotographer Tony Hallas about astrophotography itself and his experience with the EOS Ra.
